I'm not a lawyer so take this for what you paid for it. You basically have a vebal contract to sell the gun. You voluntarily gave up possession of the AR. I think your next step is to file a civil claim against your the relative you sold it to. The best bet would probably be small claims court, because anything involving a lawyer will cost you more than the $300. But IMHO you are basically screwed. I would wait and see if you get better advice from someone with better legal experience. I guess as a last resort you could slap your relative around a little bit.
