| I picked up a used Multiquip genterator and since it didn't have a manual I have a question about a switch on it. There is a idle lock switch on it and I was wondering what that is used for? Also, how much can you run off a 6000w generator(tools, or household appliances). |

Wasn't even hard...

There is a idle lock switch on it and I was wondering what that is used for? I'm pretty sure that it allows the engine to idle down whenever no significant electrical load is connected to the generator. By reducing the engine speed, it also reduces engine noise and fuel consumption somewhat. However, running the engine at idle also drastically reduces the AC frequency, which many electrical loads won't tolerate. That's why there is a switch to enable or disable it. how much can you run off a 6000w generator(tools, or household appliances).
See this Generator Sizing Chart. |
| I feel stupid now, I came in the house a little bit ago and there layed the owners manual on the counter. I didn't realize that my wife had found the owners manual when we picked the generator up. Now I just need to figure out why the engine won't idle without the choke left half way out. I'm not sure how long the generator sat before we got it, but I'm hoping that the carb just needs to be cleaned. At full throttle it runs perfect. |

You need to add up the starting watts of everything you want to run and compare to surge capacity of the generator. Usually they are rated as surge and running wattage. tt's best not to exceed the capacity of the generator. I have a 11Kw Honda that will handle my 4 ton heat pump, two freezers, refrigerator, microwave, coffeepot , lights , and once carried a 220v 3hp table saw at the same time. The saw did pull it down and I will never try that again. |

just clean it out. try a gas additive first, but you are most likely going to have to take the carb off and do it the old fashioned way.
You're the ARFCOM god of generators tonight... When it comes to gas additives for fixing this problem, Sea-Foam is the most popular, by far. |
