i posted this else where, but i haven't gotten a whole lot of response, so i am going to try here.
i'm trying to set up a medium range tactical rifle and have questions about rings and bases. i've pretty much narrowed it down to to burris xtr rings with matching bases for a remington 700. i plan on using this scope: nikon scope what height rings (low, medium, high) would i need for a 42 mm objective lens? i'm leaning towards medium but would like confirmation they'll provide the clearance needed. also, what is the difference is 0 and 20 MOA when it comes to mounts? are there any real advantages to steel rings/mounts vs. aluminum (other than steel is roughly 3x stiffer than aluminum). I am mounting this on a .308, so i don't believe recoil will be a huge issue. thanks, -matt |

try again:
nikon scope mostly 300 yards or less. once in a great while i get to stretch it out to 500 yards. -matt |

1. You want the scope as low as the obj will allow- this gets your line of sight as close as possible to your bore.
2. I'm guessing med for your 42mm but you should check with the manufacturer. 3. Steel/alum prob samey-same for your 308. 4. If you're asking about if you need moounts that add 20 MOA, definately not for a 308. That's for extreme rang shooting- prolly over 1,000 yards. As a nmatter of fact, I just talked to a guy who's shooting elk at 1,200 with a .30 Hart and he says he has no more elevation than whats in his Leupold 24X. |
