| What is the best way to go about getting an army ranger contract? Is there a certain route or path to take to get there? And is there anything i need to make sure i have in my contract before signing? Thanks |

Have a high school diploma or college degree/credits. Score above a 50 on the ASVAB, with a 110 or higher on your GT line score. Be patient, if there is no Ranger contracts, than there is none. If you are serious about it, than consider earning it, instead of just taking a slot.
The Army is downsizing and jobs and options are disappearing daily. The only thing that a Ranger contract garantees is that you have are going to airborne school and afterwards to RIP. You won't get to go to Ranger school until 3-6 months (ballpark) after completion of RIP. If you can not get a Ranger contract, try to get an Airborne contract, If that's not possible, get a 11X contract. At a bare minimum get the 11X contract. In Basic, be a stud, PT your ass off. When I went through, the Drill Sergeants gave out a few Airborne slots to guys that excelled in Basic. When you get to Airborne school, Find the Ranger recruiter, he will get you a slot if there is one. If that doesn't work, go to where you are assigned, hopefully you made it through Airborne school. Once you get there, be a stud. Ask your first line what you have to do to go to Ranger school. They will get you taken care of. They will get you in shape and send you to PRC, upon completion you have around 2 weeks before you are balls deep in RAP week. Remember that Ranger school is a leadership course, you will be taught how to lead and operate way outside of your comfort zone. Minimal sleep and shit conditions. You need to be in top physical and mental shape before you start this venture. For the contract, if you have option 40, it is Airborne training. If you have option 4, it is a Ranger contract. |

Why the Hell would you want to be a Ranger? Shit sucks man. Fucking constantly tired, wet, cold, hungry carrying your body weight around in gear. Easier stuff to do man. For that matter, become a cook, or an S1 (human resources), or truck driver, or mechanic or something - You get to make infantry guys do your job while stand around and bitch that they're not doing it correctly. - When you deploy you don't do dick, because you're on profile, constantly. - When you get home from said deployment, you'll be treated like just as much of a hero as the grunts who actually did something. - You might actually be able to find work when you get out. |

| Thank guys. This question was posted by my son who is trying to decide exactly where he wants to go. He has decided to go military before college. For a family with no military background this has become a rather difficult/confusing decision and I thank you for your comments As to why he would want to put himself through all this punishment I do sometimes question that but when he puts his mind to doing something seldom does he fail. His ultimate goal is to be in some type of national security. Any other suggestions and/or who to talk to other than the recruiter just trying to get him sign on the line would be appreciated. |

My post was made to elicit a response from him. My advice to him would have been predicated upon the response. Really want to join a Ranger Bat, tell your recruiter. If they say there's no slots available, thank him/her for their time and leave or figure out something else that appeals to him. Outside of that, all my Ranger knowledge is 25 years old. If you want some current advice, go over to SOCNET or armyranger.com. www.socnet.com www.armyranger.com [links left cold on purpose] If you go to these sites post an introduction thread before you post anything else. Read through the posts already there before you ask any questions. If you can't do this and post some question that has been answered a million times already, they will tell you to fuck off. They demand new people demonstrate some initiative and self reliance by doing their own research on their boards. Once you've done some research on those sites and still have a question, post it letting them know what you've already done to find your answer without their help. You may get a response that is less than pleasant. Deal with it and do not respond in kind. They are testing you as I did in my post above. I will tell you that life in a Ranger Bat is not easy. Your son better recognize the hazards of that chosen profession or else. |

Fuck. If I had do overs, I'd be a cook in a heart beat! I went to the Mess SGT on my knees. I said, "Mess Sgt, Mess SGT feed me please!" Mess SGT said with a big, wide grin, "If you wanna be an Engineer ya gotta be thin!" Heyyyy, All The Way! We run every day! |

I signed up for RIP in Airborne school. Same here. There's more than one way to get a chance to try for the Regiment. I was suppose to go to the Eighty Duece but a buddy of mine with me dragged me along to the presentation where I fell asleep and promptly got yelled at. I went to the front and signed up and when I looked back my buddy had left........without signing up. My first serious encounter with a blue falcon |

Might as well go for a 18X contract.... Just sayin'. Both great ways to join Division. yes they are! RIP and SWIC failures are all over the 82nd. On a side note, how many divisions are in the Army? Only 1, the 82nd AirBorne Division! I was a RIP washout (suck at swimming).. ended up in 82nd I saw other washouts go to Korea, 3rd ID, Italy.. basically all over the place. It seemed to come in waves.

Getting a Ranger contract is pretty simple really. People tend to overstate the difficulty. I got one in 2003, sure the Army was ramping up and wanted people back then, but they still didn't just hand it to me.
Basically his recruiter will take him to MEPS, and at MEPS he will sit down with a career counselor who will make his contract with him. When he gets here, the key to getting a Ranger contract is to simply not accept anything but a Ranger contract. That could be said for any enlistment contract in the Army.. don't settle on anything you don't actually want to do 100%. And don't buy their bullshit about how you can volunteer for airborne or Ranger training in basic training, that's a crock of shit they say just to get kids to sign a contract they don't want. Some people have the chance to volunteer later, others do not.. it's pure luck and shouldn't be counted on. When I went to MEPS, they looked at my ASVAB score and started pushing technical jobs on me, like some satellite commo stuff. I just said no thanks, I want infantry with the Ranger option (MOS is 11x, Ranger is called Option 40). He typed it in, said there were no slots, then offered some other MOS I didn't want. I told him no thanks and that I could just head home and try again another time. He made a phone call and 5 minutes later I had what I asked for. It's much like buying a car at a dealer.. if they don't give you what you want, just thank them for their time and leave. Make sure you understand that the Ranger contract just gets you a chance to try and join the Ranger Regiment, you still have to pass their selection process. If you fail, you get assigned to a unit based on the needs of the Army.. which from what I saw, could be anywhere. |

It all depends on how many open slots their are for specific MOS's. We got the pitch from the Ranger Recruiter at Airborne school, but he was only taking certain MOS's. |

Best bet for Regiment is through MEPS. To the OP, look at the USAF Combat Controllers. All the high speed schools, get attached to high speed units AND it's the Air Force. | My best friend graduated Ranger school last year. Couldn't have been prouder of him. I had no idea how hard it is just to get invited to attend. He told me that people were there that could care less and were gone quickly. Seems to me that they should some how run a more efficient selection process to keep only the ones who are serious about it. |

I currently have an 11x Option 40 contract and am waiting to leave for basic, my recruiters said I'll "probably" get assigned to the 82nd if I drop out of RASP but I know that unless it's in my contract, it's not promised, so I was wondering is it possible I could get screwed over with a non infantry job or something else I should be trying to avoid? |

Basically if you fail, quit or even get hurt* you will be put on what is known as "worldwide" status. You will be sent to a infantry unit that is convenient for the Army, whichever needs people at the time. Might be the 82nd might not be but definitely an infantry unit. * you may get recycled. 13F is an MOS that is eligible for the 75th and doesn't have a high % of volunteers. I was in 13B OSUT and got a 300 on my PT test. The DS's told me they were switching my MOS and sending me to RIP.
Then they found out I was Guard and they couldn't switch my contract |

Get assigned to the Cpt. but you still get to do all the cool stuff without too many people messing with you. No one knows who you really belong to and you can float around without doing all the crazy stuff non tabbed people have to put up with. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
