Because even on a site as big as this, the chances that someone will:
1) see it
2) know who/where you are
3) wish to harm you
4) use the information to do so
Are very slim.

Look at it this way - if someone wanted to hurt you and knew where you lived, would a posting on the internet be the only information they used to go on?  Unlikely that they wouldn't case the property, learn your routine, etc.

Successful criminals aren't stupid enough to take what they read on the internet at face value.
Stupid criminals aren't smart enough to put the pieces together anyhow.

The only thing I see as an OPSEC issue is posting up pictures or accounts of what valuable property you might have that's worth stealing.  Guns are one example.

But if you have an actual safe, that's not a huge deal.

Seriously, if someone wanted to find and kill you all they need to do is go to intelius.com or peoplefinder.com, punch in your name, pay $5.00 and the site gives you their address.

Uh, because my existence is completely irrelevant and nobody wants what I have enough to come all the way out here and die over it.  Seriously, it does not matter.

Lets try this:  I live in Holden, Missouri and my office is in Warrensburg, Missouri.  I'm a short, fat little fucker with a goatee and glasses who looks pretty much like every other short, fat little fucker in Warrensburg.  I work during the day and I sleep during the night.  I will be playing Fallout 3 tomorrow night at my house.

Now, internet geniouses, turn that into some way to hurt me.  How am I now more vulnerable to any kind of attack than I was five minutes ago?

EDIT:  I'm going to give away even MORE opsec by stating that I'm a criminal defense lawyer.  And I've never heard of any REAL criminal going online and looking for pics of guys with guns on an online forum, then specifically targeting that person for an attack or crime.  If someone can find a verified example of this happening, not just internet rumor you heard in an email forward, but a verifiable example, I will send them a brand new C Products 30 round AR magazine.

Let me give you some insight into the criminal mindset.  Wanna steal guns?  You don't need to correlate an internet post with a person's real identity, research their address and determine that they are going on vacation and will not leave adequate protection behind, then make a trip from your city to their city and carefully execute your pre-planned attack on their home.  Nobody does that, ever.  What you do is just run up and ring the doorbell of some houses in your own town, and if someone answers the door then you know they are home.  Tell them you are looking for someone and got the wrong address, then try again one street over.  Break into ten houses next weekend and one of them will probably have some guns lying around.   If you don't like the guns you stole, sell them and use the money to buy the gun you actually want.  Its that simple.  You don't even need to pay for broadband!

There is no anonymity on the web.  I had a buddy whose tin foil was tight...wouldn't join facebook or anything like that....so without even knowing his street address I spent all of 10 minutes on the internet researching it and sent him pics of his house...his car in the driveway (google street view).....I told him "you really need to fix your porch raiing" (could see it hanging in the google street view pics

OP

In less than 3 minutes of searching I know what kind of car you have, at least one child's gender and age, and where you were living as of 5 years ago.

If you post on the internet your security fly is immediately unzipped.

EDIT-

In 10 minutes I found your name, at least one female relative's name and where she went to high school, your address, your amateur radio call sign, and your phone number.

OP-I have no reason to go further, just wanted to prove a point.  If you would like for me to explain how I or anyone with 10 minutes, a laptop, and a few spare brain cells can do this I'd be happy to answer an email or IM.

Internet OPSEC is one aspect the other is giving people a reason to use it against you.

One example, cheating someone on the EE.  Telling them you are selling a new Colt M-4 upper, posting false pics and then in reality its an old beat up Olympic upper.  In this case you would have it coming to you but unfortunately you also have pics of your family on line too.

So if you are an honest broker and keep your nose clean then you probably don't have much to worry about anyways.

Car... so what, children(s) names... no biggy, relatives name... yeah okay,,, ham radio fcc id... that's public information, and phone number... wow
I will say this, names, address, phone number for most are in phone books and not a big deal and not a security issue. But posting about when your going to be away and talking about the things you have (and posting pictures of them) at your residence just seems foolish to me. For those that say it would be a dream for someone to break into their home, obviosly you have never had someone break or try to break into your home. But hey twit away and let everyone know everything about you. I would hope that most people now know that employers will look online to see who you are, and that it can cause you to not get a job or even loose a job.

Damn man, I was just trying to show you how easy it is to come by information.  Now I'm not sure what the point of your thread is.

The information you put online is also very long-lived. You have to assume anything on facebook will live forever in some backup somewhere from that point on.

I usually enter false information for any signup or registration request. Fake birthday (can be used for identity theft), fake location, etc. I use fake names for supermarket loyalty cards.

Call me Rusty Shackleford, but I just don't like being data-mined. Ultimately the data may be (likely will be) sold to some other company that doesn't really have your best interests at heart. There's just no reason or benefit to me to reveal the information, and some potential downside, so I don't.

That said, nobody on the internet, outside of people who are already my friends/family in real life, has any idea who I actually am.
I'm not going to give some online dumbass the opportunity to AROCK me.  Some people just remember too much.

The VAST majority of online crime involves malware (computer virus) being placed on your machine through a variety of attack vectors to steel your credit card and bank account information.   Most of the really serious actors doing this are in Russia, the Ukraine, or Romania driving some BMW 5-series that your bank paid for.    Of course West Africa is another hotbed of internet crime.

Stolen information such as this is typically sold among or to other criminals on online forums.

So . . . sure it's true that the average thug criminal looking to steal guns is probably not going to target you on ARFCOM.

However, a lot of people on here definitely go overboard on posting personal crap.  It would be relatively simple to use social engineering to lure people on here to a bad website, which could be used to install a key logger on your machine (ie it sees what you type) and steal your ARFCOM logon, and then get your home address off your account settings.    In addition your previous statements on here are fair game in a civil lawsuit if you shot a criminal.  In addition ARFCOM has, what, 160K members and the members are almost all 2nd Amendment supporters? That's a political force.   Don;t be surprised one day if a**holes try to launch some internet based attack on the site.

What all this means is, no, some druggy probably isn't going to break into your house tonight because he saw you on ARFCOM.  But it pays to be smart online just like anywhere else.

In other words, most crimes are crimes of opportunity, not from elaborate Hollywood style planning and research.
Most of the burglaries I hear about in this area  1) occur at homes which are in remote areas where there are no witnesses, 2) occur during hours when no one is at home like the middle of the day, and 3) are executed by thieves who are not particularly targeting any one type of item, but whatever they can get their hands on that will move for cash/drugs.

There are a lot of facts about me that a dedicated data miner could extract from this site, but I've always been very careful to be pretty general about where I live and I've never posted a photo without blurring out the faces of myself and my friends or coworkers. I just don't understand why anyone wouldn't do the same with as crazy as some of our enemies are these days.
