I believe Tacoma (WA) PD has moved to a digital trunked system (I'm only vaguely aware of what that means) and I'm looking for a way to monitor their freqs. I need a scanner, preferably cheap and mobile that will cover their freqs.

Any advice?

Have they gone to 800 mhz.?

If so you will need a trunk tracker, but to be honest if they have gone to the same system we have in Sno Co. the new Motorola system is a step ahead of what Radio shack is putting out right now. gonna be more of a hastle then it is worth until Radio Shack catches up.

that is what I understand but I can't confirm it

the relevant model from radio shack is the pro 96 at $500, it runs digitial trunking using the 9600 bps command channel and monitors from 806mhz. I don't plan on dropping that much on something I'd get so little utility tho.

I'll check the motorola but I can only imagine the price

I haven't seen any cheap or mobile trunked scanners. The ones that just were mounted in our cars are 8"X8"X3" (appx)

Uniden Bearcat base of some type. Not sure. All the ones I just searched on the 'net, had fewer buttons.

$519 appx seems to be the low price for trunked scanning.

Get a Pro-95. It will follow Ericson and Motorola type I and II trunking systems and runs about $130. I like mine.

I have that one...

The new system for our areas is not I or II, it is the new encrypted radios....

The only hope he has right now, is if the dispatch center for his area is patching the VHF/800 mhz so he can hear it on his regular scanner....

I work one of the centers  that went to this new set up.

Unless you are the type of TWEAKer that hooks up his laptop to his scanner's, for now you are not going to have much luck.

He will have better luck trying to listen in to SINGARS

You need one of Uniden's digital scanners.  You also need to get the card to add in so you can monitor a digital trunked system.  It's not cheap.  You can probably get a combo package for around $500.

I've wanted one for a while, but it's never made it to the top of the priority list.
