I'm sure there is a used server market.  I've never seen it other than refurbished.

Thing about servers is they, like all business assets, are kept until they are used up and then you don't want them, unless you know what you're doing/getting into.  I know people who use old servers and they are called computer geeks who see them as toys to play with.

You might find a still under warranty one from an auction.

$2000 is not much.  I assume the purpose of this server is just to have a central place to hold/archive documents and MAYBE run a light weight email program?

Unlike a desktop much of the cost of a sever goes not into fast part, but reliable parts.

you are correct, it is not a heavy use item. it is a small legal office, mostly files briefs for larger firms or show up in court and do the waiting job for the big dogs and other such things,

what do we look for? even in a rebuilt, which is what I assume is all he needs,,I know nothing of such things,
name brand, Gigabyte, power etc...I know some, but not enough to shop smartly..

thanks all.

Depending on his needs, a cloud server, slice, or other managed server might be a better bet then dropping coin on an in-house server. Especially, if he doesn't have an IT guy handy at all hours to keep it up and running.

Just my two cents as a sysadmin.

Dell have an Outlet site that sells reconditioned servers (but with the full warranty). A 'used' sever from an unknown source is a VERY bad idea.

It sounds like he needs a local IT company to help him out. A server needs maintaining once it's running. If you're trusting all your documents & e-mail to it, the value of the server is pretty small compared to the value of the data (or the lost time not being able to access the data when you need it!)...

For a small office, I would personally recommend that you look at something like the HP Home Server.  It will give you a central backup location.  You can also set it up for offsite backups.

Then I would have somebody else host your eMail.  Rackspace has a deal for $2/mailbox/month so you don't have to worry about it.

If you'd like me to drive up some weekend from San Antonio, let me know.  I can set this all up for you.

If you are looking for some used hardware, I have used Stallard Technologies quite a few times. http://www.stikc.com/

I've bought liquidated servers from them and various other hardware stuff for testing purposes. None of the servers that I've purchased have ever gone into the production environment due to the unknowns associated with them.

There are lots of new servers that you can get into for way less than $2000.  CDW link to small business servers.

Even if you tag on a RDX backup solution to some of the low end servers you still come out way below 2000.

"he needs a local IT company to help him out"
This. At least to get him up and running efficiently. Server 2008 SBS has really nice features. I also like Stallard Technology for cheap servers.
