GOT ONE!!  Opti: sky hooks are used anywhere where you have to lift something off the ground like with a block and tackle but don't have much to hook onto.  Like someone else said they are used a lot lot with magnetic bearing grease and cans of propwash.  Genuine sky hooks are identified only by using stainless steel magnets.  If it grabs, it's a true sky hook.

We use them frequently out here in the oilfield. Most of the time they're used to move the pipe stretcher around. Gotta have the keys to the V door to get to the sky hook though.

Sky Hooks are used to hold Mail Bouy's.

They are painted with Black and Yellow Striped paint.

They are normally kept/hung in the bos'n locker next to the Shore Line.

Propper Sky Hook PMS includes, clean with a fresh Bucket of Steam, then repack the Muffler Bearings and change the Blinker Fluid.

Before Sky Hooks can be checked out from the bos'n locker, you must obtain a HT Punch.

Prior to deploying your Sky Hook, you must attach 100 feet of Gig Line.

Just as a point of bewilderment, since "bosun" is already a shortening of "boatswain," just how lazy must you be to shorten it further?

I thought this would be a thread about this kind of skyhook. And I'd say we DO need some of those, just as soon as we have the tech to make it feasible.

That's funny, where I work, we usually use them to sling the wire stretcher.
That is, when we aren't using it hold a bucket of ohms.

Oh yeah, and then there's this contraption.

I think I've got some down by the bulkhead remover I took when I left the base. It was gonna get thrown out anyway.

I keep it in the shed by the backdraft remover. I like to keep my removers together.

But while we're on the topic, does anybody have some oil hardening compound, or a roll of backblast area tape?

You forgot that you need to pick up at least 10 feet of slack, for that Gig Line. You can splice it in using a water hammer, a bag of compression, and the radiator from an older VW bug.

PS, many an English car has lost it's Lucas wiring harness smoke.  That's why Lucas sells replacement wiring harness smoke, it is for the replacement wiring harness made by Lucas.
