I was off yesterday, except for a OT gig that ran 1730-2130.  Worked that, fairly uneventful.

About 2145, I walked into my office to change clothes and get ready to go back home.  My evening shift guy was there swapping out a camera battery, and he looked rough.  Turns out he had been taking care of a sick girlfriend all day and was worn out.  Being a good husband, I called home and checked with my wife to see if she was still up.  No answer, so I told the officer to go home early and I would finish out the rest of his 1500-0100 shift.  Besides, being deskbound much of the week I need the street time.  I changed from my poly's into my BDU's, grabbed the camera, and hit the street.

Hit the street, and the patrol platoon that was working was hustling.  Good, hot summer night in the city, and we have been hit hard with a people shortage brought on by unfilled vacancies and a smaller than expected academy class.  Soon enough, I was shagging calls along with the patrol guys.  Back and forth, back and forth.

At 0050, I was making one last pass through my old patrol district from when I was a junior street cop years ago when I heard a chainlink fence clanging.  Clanging as in like someone jumping off it.  I whipped the Chevy Suburban that we have as a CSI-mobile around and stomped it.  A quick foot pursuit later, I had my hands on a burglary suspect, not to mention some nice gravel rash on my knees.  Called the property owner to check the business, and asked for a patrol officer to sit with the guy while I worked the scene.

Forced entry?  Yup.
Beautiful prints at point of entry?  Yup.
Goodies in his pockets?  Yup.

Off to jail we go.  Being a former burglary detective myself, I knew that this was probably not the only job he had pulled.  I had the patrol officer transport to the jail, then set him down in an interview room.  Whipped out the Miranda card, grabbed a digital voice recorder, and turned on the gerbil voodoo.

Dude spilled it to six other burglaries.  I got him booked, trotted up to the office, and typed up two search warrants, then back to the magistrate's office to get them signed.  By this time the call load had slacked off a litte, so I grabbed two patrol officers, cleared it with my Lt, and hit them.

Total haul, $8,000 recovered goodies, seven burglaries cleared.

And I finally got home at 0900.

But but but....you ASSUMED that he had done something wrong before you knew it.  Wasn't the poor guy innocent till proven guilty?

That's some sarcasm if you hadn't noticed.

Good catch.  Love it when a simple detention/arrest turns into something much bigger.  Good job.  Keep up the good work.

Your protect-and-serve gland is too hyperactive for a supervisor....better get that checked before they take your stripes.

HELL YES!  Way to go brother!  Sounds like a hell of a pull for a very unexpected night.

My night consisted of directing traffic around a downed tree after a storm, and having two shit-stains try their best to make sure I didn't come home this morning.  Glad you got to get back out there and have a good time.

Awesome job with the follow-up, especially given the fact that your shift was over when it all started!

It really is amazing when you think you are getting off a your regular time and then end up getting off 5 or 6 hours later.

It is nice when desk jockeys can get in the shit with the rest of patrol.  Good job showing everyone what a good work ethic is...
