Protein is a macro nutrient and animal pak only provides micros and some other "stuff"

I am a skeptic about everything so YMMV

Protein is worth it though. I've taken Animal Pak. It's actually not bad. There's BCAA's in it (which are awesome) some other vitamins and minerals....and a bunch of filler. You'd be better off with just protein and BCAA's IMO, though if you have no problem spending the money then there's worse things out there.

Speaking of protein and BCAAs, is there any reason to take both separately or is taking a protein powder with BCAAs fine?

It's fine AFAIK. I usually take BCAA's pre workout and protein post as there is of course BCAA's in protein as well.
