I've got an ejector pump in a pit servicing the basement's bathroom.  It's been in use for about 4 years with no issue.  Today it wasn't running.  I checked in the closet and found that the GFI outlet had popped.  I checked the pump on an extention cord and a non-gfi outlet and the pump runs.  I used a plug-in GFI tester and everything reads/tests right.  Every time the pump starts running it pops the GFI.

What do I replace? The GFI or the Pump?

GFCI is bad, can't handle the inrush current of the pump.
The current will vary depending upon how much shit it's trying to grind and pump out.

Try a Leviton GCFI or just use a regular outlet.

Use an amp meter and find out exactly how many amps that pump is pulling, then compare to the GFI rating.

Determine what is failing from there.

Anything short of that is guessing.

Why do you want it to be the expensive item?

Did you make sure the pump will run under load (actually moving water/sewage) while it's in the basin? (From a different outlet as you mentioned) If it does, I would try a new outlet first.
