was watching the show the other night for the first time....noticed that they had what looked like boxy shell deflectors on their field AR's......is this what I was seeing? and if so why is that needed while on a mission? or is it to make the AR look cooler for TV?

It was a brass catcher. The point of that episode was to not tied back to the US so using weapons that spit out US marked brass would be a red flag.
Also because it looked cool on TV

Those are for the new nObama Green Initiative which dictates that military operation cannot contibute to global warming by leaving hot, expended brass laying at battle premises.
