I have a small collection of watches, some which I no longer wear. Currently I am replacing batteries in all of them, mainly because I was told by a jeweler (some time ago) that it harms watches leave them without batteries. I do not recall anymore what his reasoning was.

Can anyone confirm this?

I would be afraid to leave dead batteries in place; they sometimes leak.

Maybe lubricants gum up or you get something galvanic going on at the micro level.  Then again, perhaps the jewler's just drumming up business.

I do not plan to leave a dead battery in there since leakage is a real possibility.

I think maybe the gumming up of the mechanism was his reasoning.
