I think it's a choped up carbine, but what the heck is the thing on top?

Well, I know WHO it is, but the photo is too poor for me to ID the firearm and other object.

The who is Patty Hearst after she was kidnapped by and then joined the Simbionese (sp?) Liberation Army.

IIRC the M1 chopped like that was called an "enforcer carbine" flashlight would make sense but I don't see a lens and the front is kinda convex

good ID on the Patty Hearst. I was reading an artical on her when I saw that. Interesting tidbit, she was one of Clintons last minute pardons (even though I don't think she was in prison anymore)...so he pardoned a real Communist insurgent bank robbing extortionist.

is a very large cheap ass scope which would have only been good for sniping at a bazillion meters with that anti aircraft round it fired

Its a scope there are turrets visable in both pics

In the second pic carbine mags that long are curved

it is some sort of sub gun

Looks like some big assed scope in that, might even be a completely different gun, straight mag, something under the foregrip and larger bore. This one looks like the same gun (curved mag at least) confusing
