I have a Springfield 1911A1 made in February of 2001 according to SA. They said it was a custom build for a company called Accusport and has most of the features the new Loaded models have now except this one has no ambi-safety and no night sights. The rear sight is a Novak but the front is staked, not dovetailed. I would like to replace that sight with a fiber optic and leave the rear alone. Does anyone happen to know what size that front sight is? Thanks.

Here is the only pic I have of it right now, you can't really see the front sight though. It is the one on the right.

Not sure what you're referring to with regard to size (sight height or tenon width), but it would be wise to measure the sight height with a micrometer or caliper if it's already hitting POA/POI.  Usually they are .185" high, give or take a little.  The tenon is unique to Springfield.  It's between a wide tenon and a narrow tenon.  There are other considerations though.

I'm not aware of any stake on type fiber optic sights.  Maybe there are some out there, but I would assume not.  You could get a stake on front sight in wide tenon and have a smith trim the tenon down to Springfield specs, and then machine it to accept a fiber optic, but all of that would cost money.  It would probably cost less to have your slide machined for a cross dovetail fiber optic front sight.

Yeah, it looks like that is what I am going to have to do. Any suggestions? Novak's prices seem reasonable.

YOu can mail the slide only to Novak they'll mill it and install the sight and mail it back in the span of about 10 days and it'll be 100% perfect. Speaking from experience here. Yes mail it, USPS, since it's the slide you can mail it back and forth, no FFL. You can also send them the whole gun and they'll test fire and zero the sights to your distance specs but that entails overnight shipping and all that is required for the gun itself, not just the slide.

I've sent several friends to Novak when I haven't had the time to do it for them.  USAF_MTL is spot on.  They get it done quick, and their work is top notch.  Rarely will you see quality, low price, and quick turn around all occur at the same time, but you will with the Novak sight install.
