I know this is a long shot but here it is.
I bought a SA Chapion off the EE over a year ago. I can't find who I got it from but my question is can anyone identify the finish? It was done at EGW. The pistol started out as carbon steel. I know the finish is rock hard. It looks to have some discoloration on the frame. I'm hoping someone will remember what finish EGW used to apply. Here's a pic.

Just based on looks, the frame LOOKS like it's stainless steel, but you said the gun started out as a Carbon gun, so it may be coated.

The slide kind-of looks like hard-chrome, but it's a little too, I don't know how to say it, just a little too pewter, in comparison to my hard-chrome guns.

Good luck, have you tried e-mailing EGW directly?  Sometimes with all the new advantages of modern computers, they may still have a record of the gun and the work done.

I'll give it a try.
Thanks

cerakote in silver maybe?

Hard chrome...kinda doubt it.

Nickel electroless doesn't look right (maybe the frame).

Guess you need to call.

Looks like a matte hard chromed slide on a stainless matte frame.

How do I determine if the frame is stainless?

Some SA stainless frames have an SS stamp on the triggerguard.  Outside of that, I don't know a dependable way.   You can look at the frame rails and other high-wear areas to see if there is a black finish coming through underneath.

No markings but the more I examine the Champion the more I realize the work that has been done to it.  The trigger guard has been relived by the front strap. Is this standard for a Champion? I wish I knew more about it. It shoots very well and operates very smoothly. I bought it in a hurry just because I wanted a 4" 1911. Now I wonder what I do have.

Yeah, looking at the pic you can see the little relief swell under the trigger guard.

Does your box still have the tag attached? Your serial # is only a couple thousand different than my SS one.

Or an electroless-nickel plated frame.

OP, I can't find anything in Springfield's model numbers that are close to that. They are all 4 digits.

The only ones I can find with a steel frame are PX9142LP

EDIT: Nevermind, I see you stated that it is Carbon steel and that Model number no longer exists. They must have discontinued it.

Sorry, PX9511 L

I agree that it looks like a stainless frame, and a hard chromed slide.  Look at the small parts.  They look the same in color as the slide, and it's well known that Springfield Armory uses hard chromed small parts on their stainless 1911's.  The question is - why would the slide have been chromed (and the frame left un-plated) if it were a stainless gun?

I can't even find that model number on the website anymore at Springfield.

It's a mystery.

Thats the other thing. I do not find any black on the frame rails or inside the slide. Or any where for that mater. But the frame is definetly a diffent color than the slide.

Ive looked at this thread twice now and I cant help to think that the frame looks like it is aluminum to me.  I might be wrong(and probably am) but the frame looks aluminum and the slide looks like a gunkote or cerakote brushed stainless.

Definetly not aluminum. Pistol is heavy. Plus a magnet will stick to the frame. I'm sure it's older but I would just like to find out what it started out as and what finish is on it. Personally, I would rather have it black. Not knowing what isalready on it, I don't know what will stick to it.

Googling model number "px9511L", I get

PX9511L (ambi safety) / Carbon Steel Pistol 4" .45 ACP

So the frame is probably plated or coated with something, probably electroless nickel, or maybe Robar's NP3.

Thanks a lot. I tried to Google it several times and got nothing.
Found it.  Carbon Steel like you said. Now if I can just find out what the finish is. I e-mailed EGW. Maybe they can tell me.

It looks like silver Robar NP3 to me.

Here's another example:

Any idea why the frame would discolor?

Could have been cleaned with a solvent not very friendly to nickel.

Well I finally tracked it down. It's a Cobalt finish dne by Plate Tacular in LA.

The frame has that goldish cast which reminds me of electroless nickel.

That's what I would guess.

I spoke with Daniel who owns Plate Tacular. You got to love a man that stands behind his product. The guy before me screwed it up somehow. Even though I'm the second owner, he told me to send it down and he wuld take care of it. I wish more companies operated like that.

I'm posting his web site: http://www.plate-tacular.com/

Hot damn, that's some customer service!

And he's not even a manufacturer, he's just a guy that applies finishes.

Truly stand up.

Think I may be checking them out, I've been looking for a good finisher for a gun or two.
