I have a Springfield Armory 1911 GI .45 and recently I've been having problems with the empty shells not fully extracting. Is there a way to fix this problem? I checked the extractor pin and everything seemed fine but the shells keep getting stuck halfway out everytime I fire.

sounds like the extractor is slipping off the rim.

Inspect the extractor for proper tension and the extractor claw for damage.

What does the rim of the patially extracted case look like where the extractor engages it?

I'm no 1911 expert, so I'm just taking a few well educated guesses here/

+1 questions seem right on

It may be that your extractor is too tight.

If you're not sure about proper extractor tension, best to let a buddy with more experience look at it and try to adjust it.  Malfunctioning pistols are no fun.

Dump the SA extractor and buy yourself a quality one like a Wilson Hardcore. Set it and forget it.

One of the parts on a SA that needs to be changed out as soon as it acts up.

I'll try to recall some of the details from memory.... The rim sometimes has a slight scratch where the extractor pulls on it but sometimes it doesn't even when the shell gets stuck.

I would go ahead and get a new extractor too.  Something like a Wilson or similiar.

The way I have read to check  the extractor tension is to: Take the slide off the frame and to slip a loaded round under the extractor as it would sit when actually loaded off the magazine.  The extractor should have enough tension on it to hold the loaded round.  There is a desired range of tension, but I think it was 16 oz or so.  The 1911Forum.com

I can reccommend the Ed Brown units. I have them in my three 1911's. Set it and forget it!!!!!!!!!!  They do need tension set!

Problem with cheap extractors is that they lose tension and need resetting constantly, wrong metal and wrong process in making them.

Decent extractors will run for thousands of rounds without worry.
