So I got me a couple slide/bbl combos, a colt, an ithaca, and a remington/rand, 75 smackers for all 3. A little surface rust, but no pitting, look like old military ones but dont appear to have a high round count through them. I was looking to get some frames from my friendly FFL guy here, but was looking for opinions on frames I could get with minimal fitting. Thinking 2 stainless and make em 2-tone, and possibly an aluminum for a lightweight 5" model. Not going match grade, but I will probably put a good beavertail, trigger and hammer in em. Ive never built one, and have access to a smith if I need him, but id like to do it myself. I guess heres the crux of it: 1) Does anyone make economical decent stainless and/or aluminum frames that dont need alot of fitting? 2) If not, what about parkerized. (I live in a humid area and bluings a pain to keep up) 3) I would at least like a forged one. 4) can I install the trigger, mainspring, etc without being a whiz? I have built AR kits and am handy, special tools? 5) Anyone have experience with high temp powder coat? Any other do it yourself coating options other than re-blue? I have a fucked up slide to test on . 6) any other advice for a 1911 build virgin? |

Les Baers good stuff, but I was digging more for a bang for the buck off brand at a better price. Cheap but decent is the goal here, of course if I have to pay the smith maybe 300+ will still be cheaper, oh hell if I had it all figured out I wouldnt be askin.... Yes BTW I saw the resources deal or whatever, but that doesnt give advice, just instructions. |
