Newbie to 1911 questions.  This might already have been addressed before......

Are all magazines interchangeable with other 1911s?  If they are not....Specifically, for SA 1911s.

What makes and models or generic magazines would fit to a SA?

Are all of them that would fit have the same quality and pricing?

Which ones are the better magazines that would fit with the best quality & price?

I could post this same thread to the Springfield Forum????  Thanks.

All of the same info gets regurgitated with the magazine threads
I tried to condense it all here:

Full-size Springfield 1911s can use any single stack, 7 round or greater magazine.  I've gotten good service out of Springfield branded mags which I think are made by Metalform and Checkmate. Wilson mags aren't as reliable as other brands in my Springfields, although most others don't have any issues.Stay away from the gun show generic, cheapo mags.  They may be OK but quite likely will have some issues.  Stick with the brand names, and before you buy a bunch of any one type or model, try ONE in your pistol to verify proper function.

see what's best for your gun.

I have a 47D that chokes in my Commander, but works fine in all my other guns.
My RIA doesn't like the ACT mag that came with it, but works fine in all my other guns.

Not sure why this is, but.......

You get the picture.
Yes they are interchangeable.

I run the Chip McCormick "Shooting Star" 8 rounders, most are well worn with no issues. These also have the pad on the bottom, perfect for the beveled mag well of my Springfields. I was also able to get them in Stainless, they take a good beating and still fall free from the guns. I have stepped on them (by mistake of course) while shooting match type practice and even kicked them.  Pop them apart blast with compressed air and a little Rem Oil and they are good as new.

7 round Wilson 47s.

If it don't run with them, you have a problem.

I use 47D's exclusively in my old beat-up LW Commander because they are the only mags that work 100%

When I had a 1991A1 it didn't care what mags or ammo you put through it.

OP, this thread gives me a chance to bitch about Tripp Reseach 1911 mags.

I bought three ten-round Tripp Research mags recently to try in my RIA 1911.   This was an expensive mistake.   These only feed seven rounds somewhat reliably.  The pistol seems to lock open with more than seven rounds and only feeds seven rounds "sometimes."   This is with ANY type of ammunition too.

Now this RIA 1911 runs 100 percent with Wilson 47D 8-round mags with ANY type of ammo. I always load them with only seven rounds by choice.  They run fine with eight rounds too.

I knew a 10-round mag for a 1911 pistol would be a long shot.  I rolled the dice and I now have three very expensive Tripp Research range mags that I will try to shoot seven rounds through at the range but I would NEVER trust these magazines for self-defense

Go with Wilson Combat 47D seven or eight-round mags.

I know I will get flamed by lovers of Tripp Research mags here, but that's fine.   Wilson 47D mags for me all the way.   These have worked in ANY 1911-style pistol I have ever shot with ANY kind of ammo.

No more expensive "experimental mags" for me.

AND if I want a high-capacity .45 pistol, I will buy a Glock 21 or HK USP or FNH model.   The 1911 just fits my hand SO perfectly......

Brownells branded 7 rnd or 8 rnd mags work great, and if you have problems with them send them back for a full refund.  The appear to be based on a MetalForm design, or maybe even made by MetalForm for Brownells.

Not exactly.  I have a Ed Brown that will not run with 47s but likes the ETMs.  I have a Kimber that doesn't like the 10 round Wilson's. But my Wilson CQB will run what ever you feed it.  There is nothing wrong with my Ed Brown or the Kimber  they just have differNt feed profiles. I vote for the ETM mags instead of the 47s they work in all my guns.

No flame from me and I love my Tripp conversions.  As a matter of fact I'm getting ready to convert all my McCormicks and Wilsons over to Tripp followers and springs.  I've never met an extended mag for a 1911 that was worth a darn from any manufacturer.

My Wilson 47D's are good mags but the springs are getting a wee bit soft.  When that happens the Tripp conversion makes pretty good sense.  I don't own any Tripp magazines but I sure do love me some Tripp kits.

I am not trying to start an argument here but why not get new springs and followers from Wilson Combat for your old Wilson 47D magazines?   Why Tripp replacement parts?  Also, I agree with you about the extended mags sucking and I will never waste another penny on one.

They are identical to metal forms
