So I just read Masaad Ayoob's "Firearms Handling Refresher" http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/ayoob031207.html Couple of Q's about my hand-me down Norinco 1911: He says to never carrying a round in the chamber of "any semi-automatic pistol that doesn't have a firing pin lock." (To prevent inertial discharge). Q#1 - How do I know if my 'Rinco has a firing pin lock (firing pin safety?) or not? He talks about "Condition One" being hammer cocked back and thumb safety engaged with a round in the chamber and to carry this way if 1. it is a single action semi-auto AND 2 . it is drop-safe. Q#2 - What's the difference between a double action and single action semi-auto? Thanks for answering these "simple" newbie Q's. |

Ayoob worries too much. Your Norinco does not have a firing pin block. It also does not need it. Cocked and locked carry is the preference--perfectly safe, so long as the ignition components are horribly worn. Make sure that your holster covers the trigger and you are good to go. Double action is when pulling the trigger both cocks and releases the hammer. Single action (like yours) is when pulling the trigger merely releases the hammer, and the action recocks the hammer. I suggest you go to a good trainer and get some instruction. Gunsite in AZ, Thunder Ranch in OR, etc. Valhalla is in CO, I believe, and their reputation is good. Training is very important. |
