1911 fans say that you only need a few powerful rounds and gunfights average 2 shots.... yada yada yada... If this is true then why not get a revolver with 7 rds? Something like a S&W 357 magnum Advantages of a 1911 over a revolver - quicker to reload, but this doesnt matter if gun fights last 2 rounds Advantages of a revolver over a 1911 - more accurate - less likely to jam, if ever - no safty to slow you down Im a high cap semi auto guy myself I just wanted to see what the 1911 guys say Sigs rule

| Revovlers are great weapons, especially for those who are not willing to take the time to master the proper care and feeding of an autoloader. There is nothing wrong with a revolver, and I've currently got the bug, but I do prefer the 1911 for faster reloads, and the light trigger action. With a high thumb grip and a little practice, kicking off the safety becomes second nature. |
| The safety does not slow you down. It takes longer to pull a double action trigger than it ever will to snick the thumb down and press the single action trigger. The 1911 also has higher first shot hit potential. In short even if I only have one shot I'll take the 1911. Fast, accurate, powerful, reliable. What more do you need? My 1911 is much faster into action than my P220 ( no safety) |
Sure but for defensive purposes you're going to be shooting it DA. I saw a S&W that the performance dept had modified, the 4" barrel (it was a k frame I think) had been swapped out for a 2" and the trigger had been worked over, plus I think bar sto had ported it and it had had many many round through it-it was a very slick shooting gun, Hell the guy who owned it is so good he can shoot that thing faster than I can shoot any of my pistols or even faster than I can shoot one of my ARs. |
| I have been on a wheelgun kick lately and have been putting mostly 38 Specials downrange. I have a tuned 1911 as well. I think I can still shoot the 1911 better due mostly to the trigger. I also prefer the grip of the 1911 over what I have on the 686 right now as well. I have Hogue monogrips on the 686 and the finger grooves don't really fit my hands too great, but I have lived with them for a lot of years. I would like to try them Miculek grips but am too cheap to spend the money for them. I will have to try to fire a wheelgun with them on it to see if they would make a difference. I would take the 1911 given the choice, but would not feel too handicapped with the 686. |

"Gunfights average 2 shots"? Well, do tell! If you place one foot in a bucket of boiling water and the other in a bucket of ice water, then "on average" you should be comfortable, no? Nothing wrong with a good revolver...or with a good 1911 either...the magic is in the wizard...not the wand! |
| Having never been in a shooting, this is my opinion. I'd take my 1911 over a .357 anyday. The first centerfire pistol I ever shot was my dad's S&W 66 in 357. Great gun, love the single action trigger pull. I've fired hunderds if not thousands of rounds thru that thing. However my 1911 is way easier for me to shoot as far as accuracy, reloads and follow up shots. It's easier to conceal. Plus the fact that it holds 9 rounds of 230 gr whoop ass. No debate for me. |

For the little woman, bedside gun is a S&W 686+. Seven shots of .357 with nothing to remember (safeties, chambering a round, etc...) other then pulling the trigger. While it is possible, I've never seen a revolver jam. She doesn't have to worry about slide bite. Longer sight radius and heavier gun means less recoil. And quite frankly, the heavier trigger means that I'm ever so slightly less likely to be shot accidentally when I come home at 3:00 AM. For me, the bedside gun is usually my TLE/RL, or whatever I've been carrying for the day, thrown on the nightstand with my wallet. |
That's a heap of crap. It's a misconception that revolvers are some how slower than autos. At defensive ranges there both just as accurate and just as fast. At longer ranges it will take slightly longer to get the sights back on target with a revolver if using magnums but then again you're talking about the first shot right? Just as good at longer ranges but I will admit that revolvers take some more getting used to but we're all shooters here right? Long shots with DA revolvers are more than possible with enough trigger time.I carry both autos and wheelguns depending on my mood that day. |
Get the Miculek's if you can afford it. They feel awesome. I can't afford it either but my dad has them on two of his S&W's and they are comfy. |

I have two snubbie 357's and four 1911's. Love them all but when it comes to firepower and CCW I prefer my FN Five-seven 5.7x28 You get something lighter than my 3" Kimber Ultra CDP 45ACP, a round that will penetrate any clothing a bad guy happens to be wearing, very little recoil thus faster follow-up shots, and with a spare mag, 41 rounds of 2,100 fps of firepower (with SS192 ammo). Every gun has it's application and I don't want to limit myself to just one. MadDog |
