I'm thinking about trying my hand at hand building a 1911. I know it won't be cheap (it will probably cost a gppd bit more than buying a Kimber or SA with similar features), but I think I'd like to do it just for the experience. Plus I think it would be really cool to be able to take a gun to the range that I put together and fitted myself. Anyway, I was just wondering what frame and slide would be best to begin with. I've delt with other parts on a customized pistol before, but never had to choose the frame and slide. Also, can anyone recommend any literature on this type of build? I'd like to do plenty of research before I start actually working on it. Thanks! |

Go to web sites by Wilson Combat, Midway, Brownells, etc. etc. They sell books on building 1911s, you're sure to find what you need at one of those. I'd suggest an el cheapo 1911 to learn the first one on. Maybe an Auto Ordnance perhaps? Charles Daly? Essex frame? |

Tools and other specialized stuff: www.actionsbyt.com/ He also used to have a forum for 1911 builders. G23c |

This is a very fun project for me I built a few. 2 on Double Star frame with a friend, and 1 by stripping apart my ill fated SA Mil-Spec. The AGI videos are a must IMO for tackling this job. If I were to do another one, I'd use the Double Star frame by J&T which is in the Industrie Partners section. |
