So heres the issue, I have a older Springfield armory 1911-A1, it is in great condition, i got it when my neighbor passed away, He told me before he passed that he had $1500 of work done to it and parts for it. I can kinda tell, as the trigger is about 10 oz, and there are many other things as well. On to the point, I am curious if i can buy a frame with a rail on it and just swap everything onto it? How hard would it be? would the slide fit on?

Short answer:
The easiest thing to do would be to bolt on a rail, or buy a railed 1911 already built.

Post some pics of the pistol.

ok, thanks for the help. I can never get pictures to work. I have tried looking up the number to see what year it was made, but cant find it...doesnt seem to exist. I wish i could figure out what all was done to it. at 50 yds i can hit soup cans almost ever shot..its a whole lot better then them plastic toy glocks.

I hope the trigger is 3 lbs at least. If its really 10 oz. its a danger. Anyway, sounds to me like either a keeper or a seller, not to be chopped up. The more you use that pistol, the more you're going to like it. There's nothing like a tuned .45 that's a sweet shooter. Or, it would have value to many as it is, and you could sell or trade to get what you really want. What you propose is really not feasible, although obviously it could be done. The result would be to ruin a fine target pistol trying to make a nightstand pistol with a light on it - the two things do not equate.

Barrel slide hammer sear etc would all need to be refit to your new frame.

I'd forget the rail.

If it's a well done custom, your best be it to leave it like it is. It's not something that you can just swap parts around willy nilly like an AR. It might go bang, but it would be doing that gun a disservice. Either get a bolt on rail, or better yet, get another 1911.
