My 1911 tends to -like once in ten shots- not fire. Not even strike the pimer.
I noticed, when it does that, it's because the hammer didn't fall all the way, it's hanging on half-cock (like when you pull the hammer one notch back). What causes this?
Any ideas??

I'd have a gunsmith check it out.

BTW, would not have hurt to let folks know whether this is a stock pistol, part is parts pistol, new, old, brand or other pertinent details...... could help with the diagnosis.

You're right. It's a Franken-1911 parts pistol

List the components as best you can......it's most likely a fire control group issue....but it's gonna take one of the pro's to figure out where to start.

how light is your trigger pull?

Your sear when tripped is only marginaly clearing the hammer hooks. Get it to a competent gunsmith asap.

A competent 1911 smith is unavailable in my area.
Any suggestions? I live in the Sarasota area.
All I have here is a freakin' pawn gun shop, no gunsmith

Couple of questions first?

what make is the Frame?

Where did the Hammer, sear, sear spring, disconnector and trigger come from?

It's an Entreprise doublestack frame, I think the hammer is Wilson Combat, Sear, disconnector, trigger unknown, where in there before I got it (just like the hammer)
I replaced the main spring not too long ago. I also replaced the grip safety and thumb safety with Wilson Combat ones. It started doing this a few weeks after I replaced those.
I also put one of those series 80 spacers in there, it had nothing in it.

Listen

If you want to send me the Trigger, hammer, sear, sear spring, disconnector and thumb safety  along with a Self adressed return envelope I'll fit them in a Colt Frame and see what I can do.

Best I can do without the having the entire piece.

Good, now that SGB's on that for you the more important issue can be dealt with...

before he is done you should send me any other firearms that share space with the .45

There is a very strong likelihood that the the metal is drawing a significant charge to the hooks, and possibly the sear. You can send them here before throwing the parts back together and let us know if that worked. I'm pretty sure it will.

Does your trigger have a set screw for overtravel?

I've had one that would work it's way in after firing it.

Just a quick check.

Damn, it's worse than I thought. You're pistol is in very serious jeopardy regarding the field disturbances, particularly so with select fire weapons.

I really don't have that kind of scratch to throw around for all these stamps, but I suppose I'd be willing to do my part. <sigh>, the lengths I go for to help an arfcommer out.

Yes it does.
Could that do it?

Some trigger overtravel is necessary for the sear to fully clear the half-cock notch when the hammer falls.

I'd back that overtravel screw out a few turns and see if that's the problem.
