That's an excellent firearm.  Superior craftmanship!  Honestly, I can't think of another gun at that price-point w/o taking a step backwards.  Once you get to Les Baer, Ed brown, Wilson Combat, etc. you are usually looking at $1,800 to start.  That's a good price for a limited production custom gun.  Colt actually has a factory produced Thunder Ranch Special in both Blue and S/S if you are into Colts.  They run about $1,200 FWIW.  There are some diffs between the two, so make sure you check which has the features you are looking for.

Kimber Tactical Custom runs about $900 and Wilson Combat CQB runs about $1,800 and both would be good alternatives.

Good Luck!

SGB said it well.

Baer 1911's are an excellent value, and you won't be sorry if you own one, I do!

However ... you can buy a Colt 1911, an excellent holster, lots of ammo Or ...! ... buy 2 Colt 1911's

If spending in the $1500 area for a 1911 isn't a problem for you, I'd suggest looking into an Ed Brown or a RRA.
Don't get me wrong, if you go with the Bauer Thunder Ranch you will love it and it won't fail you. Just consider the competition in that price range.

And whichever gun you go with, post pics! The 1911 junkies on this board need their fix of home/range pics of guns like these.

For a few more pennies, I'd grab a Wilson CQB or a Ed Brown.
I dunno, I never really liked Les Baers 'cept the SRP.

You’re probably thinking of Colt’s Gunsite Pistol. Les Baer is currently the only semi-custom 1911 manufacture authorized to produce Thunder Ranch Specials.

I have a Bear TR Special that is closing in on 30,000 flawless rounds. The only parts breakage has been the MSH pin, which broke in half at about 11,000 rounds. The TR Specials are very good guns and well worth the money.

However, if I were ready to spend around $1600 on a 1911 I would pony up a little more money and go with this…

I agree with AJ. With that kind of $$, you could by a basic SA or Colt and get a 1* job from Yost  for about $1500 total.

Valtro, Ed Brown and STI are three other brands I'd be looking at for that price range, though I admit I would probably go Baer first just because his guns press a lot of my buttons.
