I was handling my 1911 last night and I noticed the top of the slide has little tiny specks of rust forming just to the rear of the front sight.  So much for stainless steel.

Any tips on how to get that off?

Stainless steel can rust, it has simply more corrosion resistance than carbon steel. I have a Ruger Security Six Stainless that has pitting in several small spots where a previous owner had not taken care of it.

On top of the slide where it is matte stainless? I would take some gun oil and steel wool and lightly rub it down.

Use 0000 steel wool, NOT the steel wool you scrub pots & pans with!!!!!!!!!

use the 0000 steel wool with some CLP or other light oil.  Dry steel wool--even the 0000--will noticeably scratch your finish without the oil.

CLP and a nylon GI toothbrush.
