| So my duty gun is a 21SF with the ambi mag release, and I'm having a bit of a problem. The problem is that about 1/3 of the time I do mag changes my mag release is getting stuck open (pushing from left to right as I'm right handed) to the point that the mag I just inserted just drops right back out unless I manually push the mag release back into the propper location. I have approx 1500 rounds through this weapon thus far, everything had been working fine untill I took it through a training class 3 weeks ago where I put 850 rounds through the gun in a day. I cleaned the gun afterward and it is still doing this. Any ideas on what might be the problem? I'd love for this to be something simple I can take care of myself as I don't have a backup duty weapon (that is to say another full size) in case this one needs to be down for a while. |
| The 21SF has had teething issues with the ambi safety contact Glock and they will send you a new one to replace it. You might have the old revision and the new one is suppose to fix the issue. It is not hard to change so I would just have them send it to you instead of sending them the gun. |

I had the same problem on my duty gun. Called Glock and they wanted the gun back to change the frame to a non-ambi safety. Same serial number. The other option is to have a Glock armorer call them for the part. They won't send it to you unless you are on the list. It's not hard to do, and I've taken Glocks apart many times, I'm not certified so they won't send the part. Luckily, my best friend has the newer model SF without the ambi release and let me carry his for the few weeks mine was at Glock. Sucks, but what can you do? Next qual period, I'll be packing my 1911 for duty. That'll fix the Glock issue. |

When I talked to Glock about the possibility of exchanging the ambi frame for a standard frame, I was told they would do it, but it will not be the same serial number. They advised that it is possible to have a duplicate serial number made, but it would involve a mountain of paperwork to satisfy the BATFE, and it really isn't worth the trouble. I just decided to just have my armorer upgrade the parts. edited to correct spelling |

Maybe the guy at Glock lied to me. He told me they would just destroy my frame and "make/re-manufacture" another due to the qual card having my serial number on it and they being the manufacturer. Otherwise, I'd have to go shoot another qual due to it "being" another firearm. Maybe not because they don't make them here, but import them. Maybe that was the issue. I just got the parts locally and paid for it myself, but thinking about sending it back to get the non-ambi frame. I was told by my range commandos that I could use a different serial number/same gun type temporarily with approval, but not for the calendar/qualification year. ![]() |

That happened to mine too, although I don't have quite that many rounds through it (I've got a 6" slide and 10mm conversion barrel). I noticed one of my 10mm mags had a lip on the top front edge that drug on the inside of the mag well, so I thought that might have caused it but I was disappointed it had problems at all. It actually fell apart on me (the part that catches the notch on the mag fell out after it stuck once). It didn't take long to get it back in but I was disappointed, and would have been really pissed had it had happened while I had it out hunting.
If there is a newer version of it, I need to get one. |

I don't know. All I know is when I asked about it, I was told that Glock used to do the replacement frames with the same serial number, sometimes with a suffix added, but that they no longer do it because of the hassle involved with BATFE. I don't know when this policy took effect at Glock though, so it could be a recent policy change. To the OP, sorry for the hijack.

Thanks for all the replies, been away from a computer for a few days so sorry it took long for me to get back. I'll give Glock a call. Luckily I qual'd with two guns last time (the boss couldn't find enough .45 in time so I had to use a 22 for the practice portion then qual'd with both) so I can use the 22 for duty carry till I get it back hopefully. eta –– the 22 was borrowed from another deputy for the training and qual, hopefully I can borrow it again! |
| I just picked-up on this thread regarding the ambi. safety issue. From what I gather, its not so easy to get the standard mag. release for the 21SF ? I just ordered a new 21SF yesterday, has Glock resolved the sticking-issue with the ambidextrous safety on the new models ? |

I just ordered a new 21SF yesterday, has Glock resolved the sticking-issue with the ambidextrous safety on the new models ? The first 21SF that I got was made in May 2009 that had a ambidextrous magazine release and had the same problems as the OP. The release would also stick when doing tactical reloads. I was able to send my 21SF back to Glock and they replaced it with a standard magazine release pistol. The only down side is I had to pay shipping back and pay for another background check. |
| Will the standard mag. catch made for the 3rd Gen. Model 21, fit the new 21SF. From what I understand, the material removed from the grip of the 21SF was from the backstrap. With that said, nothing else on the frame itself should be effected, right ? If I encounter any issues with the ambi-mag catch on the SF, I'd like to ba able to replace it without having to send the pistol back. I carry a 22 with the standard catch and have never had any issues. Thanks for the advice. |
| Cancelled my order for a 21SF. I don't need what appears to be future headache. I know I could opt for one with the standard mag catch but have now decided to look at either the Smith M&P .45 or go a little bit further with the money and get a Sig P220R. I already have 2 Sigs and haven't had any issues with either of the two. |

Sig is not the brand it once was.....today they are pure junk and I say this as a huge Sig fan. |

I bought a 21SF a year or so ago and I have not had this problem but I only have 300 rounds through it. How can I tell if my 21SF has this problem with it's ambi-safety? Should I just call Glock? Mine exhibited the problem when releasing a full magazine from the pistol and when doing tactical reloads down to the point of having 4 or more rounds left in the magazine. I've read many people relate something to the effect of "Well when will you ever release a full magazine?" Being a police officer there are many times when you have to administratively unload your pistol. Examples include entering jails, fingerprinting people and entering other secure facilities. The fact is some of the ambidextrous magazine releases just don't work correctly. Those that have them that work, that's great. Our local sheriff's office has the ambi mag releases and have had limited problems with them. I'm very happy with the 21SF with the standard release. I'd buy another one. I'm just not a fan of the ambidextrous release and they seem like something Glock threw together with out much field testing. I'm willing to bet this style of ambidextrous release will either disappear or go through more modifications. KEEP MINE STANDARD PLEASE! |

It is extreelmy hard to press the mag release from either side and when I do get it depressed it the mag drops but the button gets jamed up. Looks like I will be calling Glock. |
