Thinking of getting a Glock 23C (compensated). Never touched a Glock before but I generally like polymer-frame striker-fire pistols and have a few. I had a ported 1911 before and really liked the ports. I guess its a 4th gen and I have heard of a 5th gen coming up - any reason to wait?

I'd double check to ensure its a 4th gen, as Glock hasn't made a G23c since the 4th gen's were released, and claimed they wouldn't sell "C" model in the US anymore.

That said, a batch of G19c/G17c's recently appeared (and almost dried up at this point).  I saw a G23cgen4 listed on GB, but outside of that I haven't seen any.

I wouldn't hold my breath on gen5's being around any time soon.

I own a G23C gen 3.  I've owned it for about 10 years now.  I couldn't even estimate how many rounds I've put through it, but it's in the neighborhood of a metric ass load.

I regretted the "C" about 10 rounds into ownership.  Kiss any chance of a front sight picture goodbye with any of the "C" models due to carbon fouling.     And shooting in low light/no light is pretty spectacular.

I ended up going through a KKM (non-ported) barrel and have the factory barrel back on right now.

"C" models are loud! l have a G19 C purchased back in 1999. Ended up purchasing regular G19 barrel off the equipment exchange here. I don't regret my purchase as it does make a cool conversation piece.

I agree. The "M" models are NOT a gen 5 either. If anything Glock called them a gen 4.5.
Glock denied this and stated there are NO GEN 5's. And nothing in the works towards a gen 5.
This was during the time they had been awarded the FBI contract.

Yep, there were a batch of 17C/19C model recently. They were over-runs on a foreign contract
that the USA plant was working to fulfill. The overages were released in the US market.
I had trouble getting one (19C) at retail price. They were marked up over $75-100 bucks or more
over retail price which I think was $529 I think.
So, I called Glock to make sure there would be more.
They told me, NO, NO MORE are planned for US market; and stated they do not intend to
release the "C" models in the US...

You can still get a a 23C model. The police agencies are dumping the .40 left and right for 9mm.
Look on GunBroker. I have been seeing them often.

Again, the "M" model is the gen 4.5, if you want to call it a gen, and that was according to Glock.

Seems like if the ports bothered you all you have to do is put in a non-ported barrel. Would this not be a drop-in in a Glock? Anyway, thanks for the info - I just have to make up my mind if I really want (definitely do not NEED) another pistol. The idea was, since I have a .40 Kel Tec SUB2000 carbine that takes Glock mags, wouldn't it be cool to have a carry pistol that could share the mags and ammo. Yeah, but that would be, what, about my 5th 4" or smaller carry pistol? I would then be able to carry 9X18MAK, 9X19 Luger, .40 S&W and .45ACP.

It takes a few hundred rounds before the front sight disappears.  Really depends on ammo as far as flash.  One of the five loads I tested had some additional flash, the other four didn't seem much more than gas.  After 300 rounds they are far dirtier than my non-"C" glocks, and it's in odd places to boot.

They are a blast.

That ported 1911 I had was a Springfield Ultra-Compact V-10 3", and it was literally a blast when it shot fire and sparks about 18" up out of the exhaust ports, but it definitely worked to help keep the muzzle down. I don't get what you mean by 'the front sight disappeared' but blackening the sights with carbon black from a sooty candle is common in the sport. Maybe it had dot sights and the front one got blackened? Probably took a good number of rounds to do that, much more than the 2 or 3 you might be expected to fire in a self-defense incident.

I have a couple "C" models (G19's) including one of the recently released 19C gen 4's. I have not shot that one yet.

But, I do know that ammo has some to do with how clean it shoots and, you have to shoot a lot of rounds to dirty up the front sight.
The most I see can easily wipe off. The biggest difference I see with the "C" is that it's a little louder than a non-comped Glock.

That's all. And the rise, is less when fired. It surprised me to see that a 41 is not comped.
A 34 has the cut-out on the slide. I don't know why they did not do that on the 41.

Well, I punted the idea for now. I have too many pistols already and should really use that money for something else. Thanks for all the comments.

I love my 19c.
Flash really isn't that big of an issue.  It forms a V.  If the threat is in the V in close engagements, you're getting hits.  There's typically less flash in SD rounds anyway.
