 Attached FileThe first Taurus I’ve tried, a 586 Executive Grade .38 Special. I think I like it. It shoots to the sights with 158 grain specials. Trigger is pretty good, too. A bit long, but still good.. |

The most obvious difference is that you get five shots in rounds like 9mm and .38/.357, six in .32 caliber cartridges and up to eight in some of the .22s. They also have coil springs instead of flat and there are more lightweight versions of J frames too. |

 I was excited to discover that Colt D Frame grips fit the new King Cobra. My Diamondback Pachmayr grips are my favorite. So now I need to order a second set to put them back on the Diamondback. The set that comes with the KC are nice enough but too long for a small revolver like this. They also didn't fit my hand as well as the Pachmayrs do. |

I try to remember to look for 3" Model 65 barrels but they're scarce and expensive when they do show up. I've thought about a Model 64 barrel since they seem to show up more commonly but not sure it'd work, in theory it ought to, but then it'd say .38 Special on the side. I'd also be worried that with my luck I wouldn't be able to get it gapped properly.  The only time I've replaced a revolver barrel was while being watched by a gunsmith friend who had the proper tools, which I obviously don't have. It was a gun he was rebuilding, I only had one or two K frame guns at the time and didn't want to change them, but I did want to learn.

Ironic this thread is here... I just picked up a pair of Taurus 856 Ultra Lites with 3in barrels and orange night sights. They came with the short grips too, and no hammer lock! First 3in barreled revolver for me, everything else is 2in, 4in, or 6in.
I have a number of S&W revolvers, they're my favorite. The 66 and 69 are my favorites. The only other revolver I have is a Taurus 605 snubby, I bought it only to test out if I liked the snubby for CCW and it led me to buy a S&W 642PC. Taurus is as close to S&W as a guy can get, it is no secret Taurus used S&W as a template. Thanks to a great experience with the 605, I decided to buy another Taurus revolver, this one w a 3in .38 to tinker with, teach others how to shoot, toss around without worry, etc. Thanks to the price I bought two of them. Fresh out of the box they seemed gritty and clunky (typical for any new firearm), but some Break Free CLP in the right spots and they smoothed up very quick. Some actual rounds down range will help too. Off to the range tonight, I'll report back. Great thread. Lots of good info. |

Finally found a reasonable price on one of my grail guns. 686+ with a 3” barrel and nonfluted cylinder. Picked it up today, hopefully I’ll get a chance to shoot it tomorrow. It came with the factory 3-5-7 grips and a set of the Hogue Bantams. I think I’ll keep the Bantam on it.

 (not mine) In case guys didn't know, they make a 3in python, IIRC they were vaporware back in the day. Sure it's heavy, but I bet it shoots pretty well for a 3in gun

Why the love for the unfluted cylinder? You're adding rotating mass to the DA trigger pull w/o adding strength to the cylinder, for higher cost while reducing machining time for the manufacturer. Better to pistol whip someone w/?

Good luck finding a 3" L frame barrel, they're even more scarce than K frame 3" barrels. I wanted to rebarrel my 2.5" to a 3" to get the longer ejector but never found one for anything approaching a reasonable price- like I could buy another gun for what it was going to cost for the barrel then to have a gunsmith install it. The Model 65 Lady Smith is still one of the top guns I most regret not buying when they were available. I hated the script on the side but it had a different profile than the other 3" K frames that I really like, and a 3" K frame is about the ideal carry revolver. |
