Got a new Colt 1911 in 38 Super. Any downside to carrying this caliber for duty? I love 1911 just wanted something different. Thanks John

great gun, nice cartrige (only downside of .38super: ammo is tougher to get, so either stock up or reload)

Ummm
Not as big of a hole???

I really can't think of a good reason not to carry it.

Im just a junky for 9 mm and .45 when it comes to handguns.

I only have two handgun which arent a 9 mm or .45

(and I have over 30 handguns)

Enjoy your new Colt!

Nah, the high velocity 9mms tear through cars better than 9, 40 or 45.

For duty?  Is that just what you are referring to concealed carry as or are you actually talking security or LEO work?

I know that when I worked in the security industry, the company (as well as the state) had specific requirements and specifications on calibers that were allowed to be carried.

In LE, it's obviously the department regs and Chief or Rangemasters approval that is needed.

As far as the gun itself, if your agency allows 1911, then you are good to go, and the 38 super is a good cartridge so there shouldn't be any issues as long as everything else falls in line.

I'm looking at snatching up one of the RIA 38 supers before they all go away or go up in price... that, 41 mag, and 357 Sig are pretty much the only calibers I still need to acquire...

The pistol is for duty LEO We have no requirements on make or caliber as long as we can qualify with it.

If you got the money for the ammo to practice enough, I say go for it.  I would like one someday too.

When I first started shooting competetively in the late 1980's the .38 Super made sense if you needed a 9mm diameter round with decent magazine capacity with enough momentum to make major without excessive pressure.  It still made sense when the 10mm arrived as a full load 10mm has an unpleasantly sharp recoil that is harder to control than a fullly loaded .45.  However the .38 Super made a lot less sense the day after the .40 Short and Whimpy showed up.

I am not a .40 S&W fan as I either want a 9mm x19 (mag capacity and low recoil) or a .45 ACP (heavy duty stopping power) rather than a round that makes compromises on both ends of the scale.  But I would be hard pressed to justify a .38 Super anymore with the 40 S& W available doing the same job with a bit more diameter and with readily available ammunition, bullets and brass.
