This is 3 Point Bind. I have struggled on how to put this together. It is also called stem bind and can come at you in the form of 2 point bind because your case rim is too large to pass through extractor and hangs at extractor and feed ramp, never reaching barrel. That's 2 point bind. 3 point is when case actually passes through extractor jaw, feeds past barrel and bullet top hangs in chamber hood. It now has 3 points of contact. 1.) Extractor. 2.) Barrel bevel or base. 3.) Chamber hood.

I can post pictures of 2 point and 3 point bind all day long. They are all over the web and frankly I thought about using them. What seems to be a better idea is to let you guys post your pictures of 2 and 3 point bind on this thread so that way I don't offend anyone by using theirs and we get the best examples out there. No sense in me doing all the work. So, in advance... Thanks for posting your pictures.

So here's a picture I stole off of my television screen of 3 point while playing my AGI " Building the Ultimate 1911 " dvd. If you don't have it, go buy it.

Properly polished feed ramp and barrel bevel. Take it too far and you ruin a feed ramp or barrel.

Properly tuned extractor

Breach face should be free from burrs and nicks and be smooth. Disconnector should push down easily.

Barrel needs a slight bevel to allow ease of feed

Barrel hood needs smoothing by polish for easy passage, especially hollow points.

As you can see, eliminating 3 point bind is a multi stage process. If any of the things discussed becomes out of " whack " . 3 point can pop up. Bad magazines can give the illusion of 3 point. So when 3 point comes knocking on your 1911 try these steps.
1.) Go back to a magazine you know works. Like a Colt 7 rounder, reliable as sun rise.
2. ) Check your ammunition and make sure it passes the plunk test.. If it doesn't pass plunk test, chamber likely needs reamed. Hand reloads that don't pass. Set factory crimp die tighter.
3.) If you have tuned you extractor, check tension. If you haven't tuned... Tune.
4.) If you haven't done your barrel and ramp work.. Do it.. If you feel like it's too much... Support your local gunsmith...
