While replacing the draw bar on a 6906, I noticed the firing pin safety lever kept hitting the corner of the draw bar, preventing the hammer from fully cocking.

My question is this: Do I really need the firing pin safety lever?  I know the correct answer is "all parts are always needed", but I want to know if I risk: A. and accidental discharge B. Damage to the frame/slide

Thanks in advance!

I'd try asking here.

Bump to top - posted in S&W forum, as well.

Still looking for an answer -- yes/no, can I remove the firing pin safety lever and still have it function as a 'range-only, never loaded until ready to fire' handgun?

You talking about the lever in the frame?

Correct, although the question has been answered:  The gun will not fire without the firing pin safety lever, if the firing pin safety is still installed in the slide.  If both are removed (and a spacer is added to the gap in the frame where there lever previously sat), then you risk AD when de-cocking.

Also, as a point of reference for all 6906 owners.  If you ever find yourself needing to replace a drawbar, buy one from a model 59/459.  Not only are they beefier in key areas, they also have rounded inside back corners that allow the firing pin safety lever to fit/function smoother.  I had to grind/smooth about 1-1.5mm of material off the inside back corner of a 5906 drawbar to get it to work on my 6906.

And now it works safely!
