If someone wanted to use a 44 mag for personal defense and wanted rapid expansion but was not overly concerned with over-penetration, what does the board like?

The usual suspects - Corbon DPX, Speer Gold Dot. I think Federal makes a hunting load using the Barnes bullet as well.

Any decent HP with a near-max load would fit your criteria nicely.

I have used Nosler 240gn HPs on hogs, and they expand quite well.
My current load is a Hornady 240gn XTP over H-110. Accuracy and velocity are good, though I have not harvested any wild hogs with it.

Thanks, guys.

I've used plain ol' Remington (green & yellow box) 240gr soft and hollow points for years.  The HP's are very impressive as they mushroom quickly and penetrate well.  Most that I've recovered will easily cover a quarter and retain most of their weight.  Howecer, they are also technology that's a few decades old by now.  Oh well, I guess you don't fix what aint broke!

BTW, my practice load is 7.6 grains of Unique with a 240 gr hardcast SWC.  Very sweet...accurate and a pleasure to shoot.

On the rare occasion I carry a .44 mag, I run 25.3 grains of 2400 under a 200 gr XTP. Hits about 1600 FPS is a 5.5" Redhawk.

It would blind you at night though, the fireball is stupid huge.
