As the title says I have been looking for a double action 45 colt revolver and can't find a single one in production. I like the Ruger Redhawk, but it seems to be rare. I Want it for a woods gun so a 5" barrel or so.
Might have to settle for a .44 mag as they a lot more common. I also plan to pair it with a matching lever action. |

You might want to broaden you searches a bit on the .45 colt revolvers. Also look for .454 Casull since it can also chamber .45 colt.
Smith and Wesson makes the Model 25 with a MSRP of $979. |

I hate to say it, but I've held the .454 frames and don't like the balance. They seem to be 7.5" to 9" barrels as a rule as well.
I've watched for a 625 or 629 mountain gun in .45 LC as well. Basically every model mentioned isn't common, will keep looking and waiting. |

I ended up going single action for my .45 Colt. I've got a Ruger Vaquero. It is older style with the beefer frame in case color. With a bit of practice, I can get myself shooting it about as fast as I do shooting double action in my S&W Model 13 .357mag. The downside to the Vaquero is the slow reloading, unless you get extra cylinders and just pull the pin. |

Why the restriction to DA? In terms of actual shooting, with a little practice an SA will fire almost as fast and Blackhawks are quite accurate. It's a matter of learning to cock with the thumb on the off hand. It's only marginally slower given the shorter and lighter SA trigger pull on a Blackhawk. The real advantages of a DA are the faster loading process and faster single handed shooting. A 4 5/8" convertible Blackhawk in .45 ACP/.45 Colt and a Model 92 in .45 Colt make a great pair. http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h470/SDBB57/A0A339E5-6817-40FE-A772-3FE9E4AE728C-11449-0000134B5FB1A0E5_zps89e0c6e9.jpg Looks just like my Blackhawk. It makes a great woods gun for a large bore at a reasonable cost. That said I usually carry a S&W model 19 with 158gr SP anymore while hunting since it's lighter. I've shot deer and hogs with .357 and it works well enough on anything in the southeast. |

I had a new model blackhawk in .357.
As rarely as I shot it, I just wanted to go up a caliber. I was not to fond of how the gun rode in my hand when I shot magnum loads, medium to warm loads were fun and controllable to me. I have seen the Bisley grip super black (or just blackhawk maybe) but have yet to hold one. I do like the smith/ruger modern frames as far as comfort is concerned. On a general note I am set up to reload .357/.38 but will grab dies and components to load whichever I decide on. |

If you do go with reloading the .45 colt, I noticed I do best with Nitro 100 in lead and either Bullseye or Unique when running jacketed. |

Here is a Colt New Service that should fit the bill.
Not in great shape cosmetically but looks like a solid shooter. New Service 45 Colt |

I picked up what looked to be an unfired 25-13 Mountain Gun on Gunbroker a few years ago for $500. Very nice gun. Quoted:

You can't go wrong with a 45 Colt.

Here is something I keep going back and forth on... 4", 5", 6" barrel size?
4"-5" I've dealt with as all my other autoloaders/revolvers fall into that barrel length range. I have shot a 6" but never carried one holstered so drawing is my concern (or just lots of draw strokes to correct for the extra inch) |
| FWIW, my 4" GP100 carries a lot better than my 6" S&W 586. This is especially the case if you have it on your belt and are getting in and out vehicles etc. I don't know about 45 colt ballistics but you would think a big heavy slow bullet wouldn't lose much velocity going to a 4" barrel from a six. |
| Smith, Colt and Ruger have all made 45 Cotl DA revovlers over the years but the market was always very small. The demand just isn't here. Compunding the problem is the Smiths aren't really built for stout hunting loads. Ruger Redhawks are out there but you'll probably have to look hard for several months AND pay a pretty penny. A Colt will likely be a king's ransom. |

I dunno what your budget is, but an old Colt Anaconda in .45 is a pretty sweet shooter. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3750/9513592499_d3b6d1a9ac_b.jpg This is my second one. I sold a 4" and regretted it for a long time. This is a 6" and it's very nice. I was going to mention the Anaconda, as the original post made no mention of any budget constraints -- (myself, i'll also take the highball, but skip the stogeys |
