I bought my dad a S&W 500 for christmas and a local store had some low recoil crap that he first bought and it was really sad stuff.  He's been snooping online trying to find some decent deals and he mentioned one place claiming to be the only place with 700grain bullets.... He was really interested in them.  I've always messed with military calibers and bought the cheapest .45, 9mm, .556, and 7.62x39 I could find and shot them up, so I know NOTHING about this stuff.  ANY help that can be offered would be greatly appreciated!

I doubt many people here have a lot of experience with that caliber. Best bet is to buy online if your local selection stinks.

Your dad is a tough guy.  I have a .454 Casull and I find the recoil objectionable after 10 or so rounds.  I shoot .45 colt +P or less and am happy with that.

He is a tough guy for no larger than he is, but let me clarify, he's not ancient or anything.... he's 55.  AND he hasn't shot heavy loads out of it yet, so we'll see.  I bought him one with an 8 3/4" barrel that is compensated so I'm hoping that helps.  He ended up finding a deal online at Ventura Munitions.

the first time he shoots those 700 grain bullets, will be the last he will ever want to.

I have a friend who has a 500S&W.  I seem to remember him saying that the 700gr stuff was only for the longer barrels (I want to say he has a 6in and it was for the 8in... but I don't really remember).

He shoots this stuff: http://www.cabelas.com/handgun-ammunition-hsm-bulk-500-s-w-ammunition-1.shtml

It isn't to be laughed at either.

He has never fired any of the 700gr stuff.

700 is more for people who want to shoot something in Africa with a pistol

He'll shoot a few, put it down and take some advil that is for sure.

Reloading-think about it

Doesn't take much to keep one of these beast revolvers happy.
Mail order 2 or three different bullets and a couple of hundred cases and get your primers and powder locally.

Single stage or turret press (used is fine) and a couple of load books and you are good to go

With the cost of S&W 500 loads you can cover the cost of equipment in a dozen boxes

I shot 600gr out of my 500 and it was enough for me. I went back down to 350 after that...I was never able to find any "good" deals on it though, its expensive no matter what. I always wanted to try the 700gr but couldnt find it around here...

Good logic here ....while not much experience with the 500...I have a desert Eagle ,...and reloading is a very good option for me to save money and tailor the load I like to shoot alot.
