So I purchased a 5906 LE trade in that was advertised as "excellent" condition. When I finally got to look at the gun it was far from excellent. So I would like to restore it to it's original glory and make it look NIB. I have the frame completely stripped and I will soon have the slide assembly in pieces. Who is the best in the business for restoring the bead blasted finish on these 3rd gen smiths?
Also, while I've got everything torn apart, what are the must replace parts in this gun? I'd also like to swap out the black hammer and trigger for the early model stainless versions, are these are a direct swap or will they not work? Here are some photos.

| I would definitely replace all of the springs, which is not that hard if you are handy. I did it to mine years ago. Go to Numerich for gun parts/springs. You can find a wealth of info. there and see what parts fit other guns. They have the best selection of items you need to restore older guns and the prices are not bad. |
So I completely removed everything except the extractor and gave it a deep cleaning. I went very light on the finish with a scotch Brite pad just to blend it all in. As of right now nothing has been changed or upgraded, but I do plan on it. Here's what it looks like.

I didn't replace anything because I wanted to get it ready for a range trip this weekend (yesterday). Every round was flawless and it ate a couple different types of ammo.
All in all I'm happy with it. I'll get it bead blasted eventually, but all the springs will be upgraded and I will upgrade the plastic pieces ASAP. |

Mmmmmmmm My next 3rd gen will be a 6906 and if I can find a nice one a 4506 as well. Smith should have never changed the 3rd gen smith line. They're beautiful guns. Quoted:

| My wife picked up a 3913 for me last ear when she was passing by Bud's on her way to the Trader Joe's. A couple cuffs on the edge of the beavertail, and the sights had the bluing worn down. $300. I touched up the sights with Brownells Oxpho and a Q-tip. Great, flat little gun. Using a Versa carry commander holster, it eats crappy cheap and deep 9mm FMJ, Federal JHP +P, and a bunch of 124-gr PMC Starfire I got on clearance last year. |

I had one like that awhile back. Lucky its the one with the stamped logos rather than the etched.
Two options. Scotch Brite pad or get it bead blasted. Bead Blast will make it look new. Then you can get a new set of grips. Not sure it you want to spend the money though There is at least one Youtube video on how to make your own bead blaster out of a soda bottle. I made one and it worked pretty well. |
