Does anyone have one of these or any short barrel 44 mag?  I think I may want one.  629

It looks cool, but in my exp .44 mag needs at least a 4'' bbl,I've never been a fan of long bbls on handguns, but it is what it is.You could always load up some lighter loads or use .44spl,but using full power .44 loads in a short bbl leaves a hell of a lot of unburned powder in the gun.

I have a 3" 629 that I shoot 180's and 240's out of. It's quite a pleasure to shoot. The
recoil is not too bad.  I picked it up used for $600 w/magna porting and night sights.  I
would recommend it for the advanced shooter, it's not a novice gun.

I also have a 3" 629, and a Magnaported Anaconda, and I can tell you that the Magnaporting will make a big difference.  The 3"629 is a pleasure to shoot with 44 specials, but with full magnums, it's not for the faint of heart.  It would be okay with full-sized grips, but mine has the fancy wood that only covers the frame.  It's deadly accurate, I can shoot about 2" groups at 25 yds, but it's hard to do because of the short sight radius.  Depending on what you want it for, I won't discourage you from buying one, because I love my 629, and I'd like to have one of these as well.  But, if it's your first .44 magnum, I'd go with at least a 4" barrel, maybe the scandium frame model.  Note that if you want to carry it when hunting, and potentially take an opportunity shot at a close animal, some states have minimum barrel lengths to be legal.  In Oklahoma, it's 4".

It will be my first 44 that I will own, but not the first one I have shot.  I am comfortable with magnum loads so I am not too concerned about the recoil.  I am glad to hear that those with the 3" barrels like them so much.

I've got a 629 VComp from the performance center. It's got a trigger like a fine bolt action rifle. Impressive revolver. Four inch barrel.

That's the kind of stuff I like to hear.

Hit yourself in the meat of your hand with a ball peen hammer. That's how that small round butt is going to feel if you shoot a full house load.

Yeah, um, no way.

I like my square butt 4inch 29 just fine with old type magnas.

But I wouldn't shoot that linked round butt for anything.

we have a couple in the store I am working in right now. They are a sexy beast.

I own a 3" 629 that I love to shoot but it is quite a bit heavier with a full lug barrel and a unfluted cylinder

I have a 3in 629 (upper left) the first time I shot it was at a military range where we were shooting bowling pins at 25 meters.  I hit eleven in a row before I missed one it was one of my favorite hunting pistol until they changed the law and required a 4in barrel.

I love mine!
S&W 629-6 PC

FWIW, if you're in any way "recoil sensitive," then perhaps one of these babies just isn't for you.
However, for me, she's a very sweet piece.  The stock "boot" grips are very good lookin' and fairly "grippy" (there's some good checkering on 'em), but they're just too damned tiny for my large hands.  I'm going to replace them with a Hogue "Tamer" Monogrip which will fit my hands much better (see below).

Thus far, I've fired a mixture of .44 Magnum and .44 Special loads through mine.  Thus far, the "hottest" rounds that I've fired through her have been some 270 gr. Gold Dots (which were very "lively" ).  The .44 Special loads that I've fired basically feel like .45 ACP hardball, while the .44 Magnum loads feel about like a double dose of .45 ACP +P.
Here's the loads that I've shot through her to date:

I hope that helps, GA_USMC.

I always appreciate people sharing experiences.  I already picked mine up.  See here

I love mine too.  Its actually my new carry piece.  I wanted a revolver so I went big bore. I really like the 44 mag Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel JHP.  Have you tried those?  Very similar to shooting 38+p.

Good deal, dude.  I hadn't noticed your other thread; I need to check-in here on a more consistent basis!
I haven't tried the Gold Dot "short barrel" JHP load, but I'd sure like to (if I can find it).  I'm going to hit my local funshops later this week and try to pick up some new loads.
I basically had a similar thought-process about this acquisition ... i.e., I wanted to buy a revolver (shot 'em intermittently for years, but never bought one) and figured that if I was going to get one, it was absolutely going to be a S&W in .44 Magnum.  Well, one look at this piece and I knew that this was the "one" for me!
