Well I love 1911's just like most of you, but .45 ammo prices aren't pretty.  So, who makes a blued 9MM 1911?  Figure I'll pick one up and use it for my range time to save a little cash.

Why not a .22 conversion kit? You'll save even more that way. I imagine that you being a serious shooter (serious enough to justify downgrading to cheaper 9mm) will be losing quite a bit of money on harder to find magazines and replacement parts.

.22 conversion or reloading seems to be the cure for what ails you.

The last time I looked, 9mm Para Colt 1911 were on the expensive side.  The reason is that they were slow seller, when they were available years ago.  I saw a Colt 9mm 1911 at Pachmayers Pasadena Calif years ago, and it laguished on the shelf for 2 years that I know of.

Call Kimber.

It's my understanding that they'll make you one if you can't find it on the shelves.

+1 and I just saw some pics of Tactical Solutions' new .22 conversion kit that looks freakin awsome.

It seems that 9mm in a 1911 is really practical in a very compact gun like Springfield's EMP, but I'd rather have a .22 conversion for the fact that it's cheaper than a whole new gun and you have the versatility of two calibers on the same platform.

Ya know, for some reason I didn't think of the 22 conversion even though I've been contemplating getting one for a while now.

I still think I may want a 9mm one though just for shits and grins.

The other thing I need to do is start reloading and then I won't have to worry about the prices as much.

STI makes 9mm 1911's - Ranger II, Trojan, Sentinel all single stack

Reloading equipment can be had for less than the cost of a new gun.  Then, shooting .45 would be less expensive than factory 9mm.

A good .22 conversion is very valuable.  I have a marvel.  It is great.  It was expensive, but well worth the money.

Bigest myth you save money reloading.

Per round yes, but I just shoot 2/3 as much with reloaded ammo.

No doubt I'm rowing against the tide in here, but I vote against the .22 conversion kits.

Yes, I know they're popular. Yes, I know people who have them & love them.

But for me, a caliber conversion on a gun is somewhat gimmicky. While I love .22 handguns (I own many), I personally prefer the balance of a .22 when it's made to be a .22 & not a .22 slapped on a 1911/Glock/whatever frame.

Just my opinion...............

As for the 9mm 1911, my 9mm is a Springfield Armory single stack. No clue if they still make them or not. A visit to the mfgrs web sites will no doubt quickly let you know what your options are.

Above all else, avoid the Charles Daly brand 1911!!!!

Another possible option is the Browning High Power, IMO.

I picked up a RIA 38 super then got a Kart easyfit in 9mm for this,  cost aorund 600 after mags barrel, and gun   then I noticed a springer mil-spec 9mm on GB for around that price.  Many ways to go about it,  all of them require spendign money.

$609 plus shipping for one thats had a little work done.

The 1911 is supposed to be a .45 ACP.

The BHP is supposed to be a 9mm.

Springer's EMP is a good basis for someone smart to run with.  Regular 9mm 1911s are dopey.

Springer reconfigged the setup to fit the length of the 9mm cartridge.  But they fucked up by making is a 4 figure pistol.

They should have miniaturized the Government model and ditched the frills.  If they could stuff their design into the equivalent of a mini Govt model for $600ish, they'd make a fortune!

Here's a thought. Pick up a used Spanish Star in 9mm. 1911-style without the grip safety. I've never had a problem with any of mine and you can find them for about $250 if you shop around. One of the local CHL instructors uses them for students who don't have their own guns yet.

Do you have a pic of yours?  You're the second guy to suggest that pistol.  My brother in law had a Star 9mm, but it was nothing like the 1911.

There doesn't seem to be a massive selection of full size 9mm 1911's out there, so I figure I'm just going to get a frame and slide and drop it off at a big name smith.

Try Para Ordnance. They have some outstanding 9mm pistols.

Don't have a pic of my Star (no camera) but it is one of the older, 1911 "pattern" guns.
Think Jule's gun in Pulp Fiction. It's a nickled Star Model B wielded by Samuel l. Jackson. Strong resemblance to the 1911 except for no grip safety, external extractor and the slide tapers more at the front than a 1911. The later Stars (Firestar, Ultrastar, etc.) are nothing like the 1911's. Do a search on Star Model B, Model A, and Super and you'll see what I mean although the latter two are 9mm Largo. The model B's were allegedly used by some British units in WWII and there are some Nazi-proofed versions as well. Go here for more pics and info. http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg79-e.htm

If you look around, you can find a NIB Colt 9mm 1911.  Here's mine after a little work was done to it at Wilson Combat and some Duracoat on the frame:

Had a Kimber Target in 9mm.
Good shooting gun, but mags are finicky.
Had to have the followers tweaked by my 'smith (wouldn't lock slide after last shot).
I think the Target is the only model Kimber makes in 9mm.
