I gathered all the rough gun and new parts, sent the frame and slide to the late Walter Birdsong's outfit for "Black T" finish.

Gary Dean assembled and tuned it.

That's about it.

It's just the original, factory Colt barrel.  Vintage 1977.

Looks good. I think it would look better without the stainless controls though. It needs some nice wood or VZ grips. I'm very envious as i've wanted wanted a 9mm commander for awhile.

I agree on the grips.  I just had an extra set of these "Carbon Blingation" things laying around.

This better shows the Ed Brown hammer and safety:

Looks great.  The stainless accent(control) pieces won't win all hearts, but they make for a nice contrast on a worked over pistol. I like it. The cabin grips fit this pistol too. Enjoy it.

Thanks

first 4 mag's thru it, 9 round Colt factory mag and three 10 round Virgil Tripps...the gun's perfect, the shooter's got a long way to go!

I love it when a plan comes together.

Thanks

It's a piece of cake to shoot.  I sought out a 9mm to build for commonality of ammo with my other 9mm's, and low recoil for quicker sight acquistion in IDPA comp.

Have you competed in IDPA yet with your 9x19mm Combat Commander?

Works better than I'd hoped.

My skills?  Not so much.

I have developed a serious problem with 9mm 1911s over the past couple years.  Had a commander custom built by Ed Vandenberg mainly for the wife last year.  I fell in love with the way that thing shot.  Then I lucked out and found a SA loaded SS full size 9mm at the gun show last fall.  Had Ed do some trigger work and change the sights.  That is now my primary IDPA gun.

That rework of yours really turned out great!

Too glitzy for a classic gun.  If you're happy with it, thats all that matters.

Why do the sights have a gap between them and the top of the slide?  Is that the way they are supposed to be or were they installed wrong?

Nice transformation.  I don't care for the contrasting parts or the sights; no hating –– that's just me –– I'm glad you are happy with it.

Looking at this pic, I can't help but think you could have done an all dark finish and installed a set of wood grips to match the Agent and you would've had a nice "matching" pair.

Sites look a little dopey but that is a great looking gun!

I am interested in knowing what rear site because I have  Defender that has the Mil Spec sites Like the OP's Commander before mods. I would like to use another rear site besides the mil spec ones but most sites would end up hanging over the back of the slide.

OP your set up looks great. Not trying to take away from you.

The sights probably wouldn't sit flush unless the slide was flat topped.

The dovetail in the slide slide wasn't machined to the correct depth for the sight.

The Novak dovetail came before the sight.  Dawson has several different sights, so we're looking and swapping around a bit.

Sure shoots well regardless of the cosmetics.

What site are you planning to use and which site is the one that you are using now?

The sight I'm using now is the Dawson Precision fiber optic.

They're looking at the way it fits now, so I'll just have to wait and see what, if anything different, they suggest.

I might just end up sending the slide to them and see what they can get to better fit.

But I'm really pleased with their front fiber optic over the Novak.

Sent pics to Dawson and they said to send them the slide for a better fit.

It's in transit.

...and who bubba-ed that beavertail?  The frame should have been cut before the refinished, not after.  The frame should have been contoured to match grip safety profile.
