So I have been beating myself up for weeks on this... want one.. gotta have one.  Just bought a really sweet G19 NiBx as an impulse buy and it has just made me want a 9mm commander 1911 more.  I already have a G19 I refuse to part with so this gun needs to go and it needs to be replaced with a 1911 in 9mm.

So, what are my options?

Dan Wesson Guardian
Dan Wesson CCO
Kimber Aegis
STI Spartan IV
Colt Commander

is that it?  I would REALLY like to stay around $800 here, ideally trade the G19 + cash, which limits my options to probably just the STI right?  If I can find one.

Apparently Tisas makes a 1911 9mm commander size, and that is essentially made by the same Armsor deal as the RIA guys right?  If I could find something like that that I could get into for $500 or less right now I would jump on it today.  I have experience with the Armscor stuff and I am more than happy with it... especially since I plan on doing some custom stuff to it down the road and the less I have to put into it from the start the cheaper it will end up being.

I have also considered doing a Caspian semi build using a race ready frame and a commander slide but that would put me already at $500 or so even before I get into fitting and barrels and whatever.

This will be basically a project and a toy until the point I decide it is reliable enough to become more.

So do I have any other options?

Do they have an option for 9mm?  I am not seeing it on their site in 9mm.... I wouldn't mind owning a ruger

My apologies, I totally missed that you were looking for a 9mm (Doh!).

No sign of a 9mm Ruger SR1911 yet - and after having owned a full sized SR1911 for a few months now, I can assure you that I'll be lining up for a 9 mm if they produce one.

Good luck with your decision!

I've have nothing but success with my STI Spartan IV in 9mm. I'm running it with Wilson ETM mags. I did come with one CMC mag; but I prefer the Wilsons. I would say that I have around 1K+ conservatively down the pipe. Right now it's off to Alchemy Custom for a little bit of cosmetic work. The STI is GTG for sure!

I think you have to nail down some other considerations first.
and your list is a bit weird.

DW guardian is alloy frame with bobtail and regular bushing slide.

the CCO only comes in 45 as far as I know, and it is the commander slide but officers frame.

the spartan and kimber are both bull barrel guns, the kimber is actually a 4 inch not 4.25 inch like the spartan. not sure on the kimber frame but spartan is cast,(not that there is anything wrong with that).

The spartan is comparable to the match RIA, so you would be stepping down if you got the TISA which would be the same as the tactical.

Colt doesn't make a 9mm commander in current production, so you would be spending more or about the same as the guardian for a used commander without a beavertail and gi sights.

so do you care about the sights
beavertail
bushing vs bushingless
bobtail
frame

STI's Ranger II is another one to consider.   They retail right at $1000 or so.

so do you care about the sights -  I will be adding night sights at some point but milling them in isn't a huge problem... always better if I dont have to...
beavertail - I'd like it but it isn't  HAVE to have.
bushing vs bushingless - does it matter?
bobtail - I plan on bobbing it if it doesn't come bobbed.  I am not concerned about the labor involved, looks to be no problem with my machine shop capabilities.
frame - Lighter is better but I would also like strength to last awhile... will be doing slight modification to the frame so if something is a no no for cutting into and keeping strength that would rule it out.

While I have experience with 1911's and I am conversant with how to field strip a GI and clean it and put it back together and shoot and manipulate it this will be my first 1911 I will actually tinker with and modify.  I am learning that 1911's are a whole different animal than Glock's but I am not overwhelmed by it and I am anxious to learn more about it.

Which is why I am trying to get a list together of all of my options in the 4-4.25" 9mm "commanderish" style market.  Once I have a list of options I can start comparing and contrasting.

I am not married to the 4.25 length either, I just know the compact is too small and the 5" is too large.

ETA -

This right here is just about perfect

Iver Johnson

"Model Hawk.  Only available in 9mm in the matte blue finish, not the polished finish. 4.25" Commander size pistol.  Novak style low mount rear sight with dovetail front sight.  Extended slide stop and thumb safety.  Beavertail grip safety with memory cut.  Angled serrations in front and rear.  Bevelled magwell.  Lowered and flared ejection port.  3-hole trigger and skeleton hammer."

Its not super expensive... I believe these are made out in the Philippines by the SAM guys. I would have no issues/hesitancy milling that slide up and modifying it like I would a Dan Wesson.

But of course I am instantly leery of the Iver Johnson name and I really know nothing about their 1911's except that most reviews seem to be ok and I can't find this one in stock anywhere.
