Sorry I'm a noob. does anyone know the diff. between these two mags? I ordered some ACT-Mags online and when I finally got them they sent me MEC-GARs. I have an act-mag/novak that came with my pistol and comparing the two(act-mec) they are almost identical. Guy at the place I ordered from first said they are the same company. I argued a little with him since I had looked up mec after I got them. He called back 20 min later and said they had shipped the wrong ones and if I wanted to I could either keep them or return them.
They seem to be high quality so I am going to try them first before returning them. |

Both made in Italy from two different companies. I read somewhere on a 1911 forum a few years ago that an employee from one company went over to another. I don't know about that story but the two mags look very similar. I let my two Mecgars go with a pistol trade and have about 8 Act/Novak/Armscor mags and they all worked fine. I will say the plastic base pads don't like repeated droppings on concrete. David

I ordered two of the Mec Gar Elite-8 mags from Brownells a week ago. They have the Mec Gar logo on the mag body, but say 'Cobra-Mag' (Tripp) on the base pad.
Nice mags regardless. I have always liked the metal Mec Gar follower better than the followers in my Wilson mags. |

As others have mentioned, Mec-Gar and ACT are two different Italian based companies. Mec-Gar makes magazines for a lot of gun manufacturers (other than 1911 mags). I have a couple of their 1911 mags and they are good, solid mags for the money. ACT makes the mag bodies for Wolff, Novak, and Nighthawk (I think). At one point, the feed lips on the ACT mags started cracking. They supposedly fixed this but I have seen conflicting reports on whether they truly fixed it. I have one ACT-Novak 8-round mag and it has functioned fine.
If the ACT feedlips don't crack, I would say these magazines are of comparable quality. |
| ACT mag used to come with S&W 1911's. Not sure if they do now or not. But when they did..they worked great but after about 500 rounds I had 2 ACT mags feed lips spread. It didnt break yet but just spread open. S&W sent me two new replacements free but I still watch them closely. |

Different company. If I recall correctly, ACT was started by former MecGar employees. I thnik they both suck, but the ACT sucks more. MecGar sucks huh? That's funny considering they're the oem for sig's beretta's cz you name it....You're a promag kinda guy arent you? MecGar mags are top notch and I use their mags for duty use daily.. |

This is a discussion concerning 1911 magazines. In the 1911 world, MecGar is an also ran. They make great mags for other platforms, but Wilson, Tripp, and CMC make far, far better mgas for the 1911. BTW, I am a CMC Powermag with Tripp kits kinda guy. |

I have extensive experience with the Novak/ACT mags. I used them a lot as range mags, training mags, and for competition. They are decent mags for the cost. My experience is similar to ESq1118's. I find the lifespan to be around 2k rounds. Then the back of the feedlips crack and the mags have to be tossed. The lips do spread before that, but they still work just fine until they crack. While they have life left in them they work quite well though. I've gone through about 10 of them and have no plans to purchase any more. Most of them were "freebies" with various 1911s either I or my dad bought. I think I may have purchased a few as well. I won't purchase any more of them, but I wouldn't turn them aside though. Just recognize that they are a very life-limited part. |
