I need help, as my Colt Python has stopped shooting double action. The problem started about a year ago, so I put it into the repair shop, and had it repaired. It worked for about a week or two and the same problem reapeared. The transporter turn's the cylinder to far which mean's that three of the chamber's (next to each other) are miss alligned and the this is causeing them to fail to fire. Has anyone got any idea's? PM's please. The German gunsmith with whom I spoke this morning didn't really have a clue as to what the cause could be, that's why I'm throwing the the question in on the forum. Tony. |

Sounds like your bolt has gone "out of time"...a not too unusual problem with the older Colts. The answer is all in the bolt and rebound adjustment...but...you do NOT need to let just any gunsmith diddle with a Python, so I have no real idea what your best bet might be there in DEU. Let's see if DFW (defariswheel) will jump in here and lend you his expertise on the issue. If we get no response from him in a couple days, I think your best bet would be to email or call (yeah, I do know what international calls cost! Hah!) the Colt service people and see if they have a German, or at least a european service / repair center. If not, I would rather put my Python away until I could get it back to the factory than trust it to a guy who knows zip about the Colt D/E/I models specifically. Cheer's ikor, I already e-mailed him, well I did if his first name start's with a 'G' .I have it in for repair work at Colt Importer's for Germany. The thing that is worrying me is, the conversation on the phone that I had with the gunsmith this morning, and the fact that he said that he'd have to sleep on it .Thank's for you help. Tony Edited to add that the weapon was purchased new in 2000. |

The best book out on repair of these revolvers is...by far...Jerry Kuhnhausen's shop manual (volume 1)...but it would not surprise me in the least if your guy does not have access to one. You can get it through Brownell's for a very reasonable price. It describes, in great detail, what to look for and how to deal with this and other issues. www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=13805&title=Jerry+Kuhnhausen+SHOP+MANUALS |

I don't know who Colt uses in Germany today, but you might contact Colt and ask who they'd recommend. Their German service centers USED to be : Helmet Hofman P.O. Box 38 D-874 Mellrichstadt/Bayern West Germany Frankonia Jagd Postfach 6780 8700 Wurzberg 1 West Germany The older Colt action like the Python is a complicated and intricate design, that is NOT easily understood. For this reason, when gunsmiths who are not trained and qualified on the Colt's attempt repairs, they typically not only fail to repair the action, they cause more damage. Until you can get the gun to a Colt-qualified pistolsmith I would NOT allow anyone to work on it. |

E-mail on it's way. The gunsmith is a Frankonia Jagd bloke, who seem's to be okay, by that I mean, he know's his limitation's and has agreed to wait untill I can get some good advice from the expert's. Ikor thank's for the info on the book, I just don't think that the gunsmith's einglish is up to it though, even if the author has a German sounding name Tony |
Wilco. What I'd really like to do is send it to Colt to have them repair it, but having just got off the phone with the legal beagle concerning the sending of a handgun to the US for repair's, I'm now forced to have it repaired nationally here in Germany. As the weapon is already at the local Frankonia store, I called their centrall in Wurzberg and got to speak to their gunsmith who assured me that he could fix the problem and know's a lot about Python's. Tony A big thank's go's to you all, and I'll let you know what the out come is. |
