Any thoughts on Accurails, specifically is there any special care required and how long will they last before needing to be replaced?
I recently acquired a 1911 from a deceased friend's estate and it has accurails. |

Not something I would have done, but done right they will last and last. I agree with you, it's not something I would have had done if I was having a gunsmith build a pistol for me. The gun has sentimental value to me because it came from a close friend's estate and I plan on using it for competition. The accurails just seem to be additional parts subject to breakage. |

They have their place. I've worked on a few guns that have Accu-rails (mostly well-loved comp guns) and never heard of a problem with them. They have two main benefits: they are one option for tightening loose slide-frame fit, and they can easily be replaced once they wear to a point the slide has gotten loose again. Put new rails in (or larger ones) and you're back to a good tight fit.
They aren't something I'd do unless the slide were really loose. They work well on aluminum framed guns, where traditional methods of tightening (welding, peening) are sort of off the table. |
