Can this be done to a new production M&P45?

Does it have the frame cut out? If so, yes. You would need to buy the thumb safety and somehow get someone to send you the spring and cam from the sear housing block. I used one from a 45 in my 9mm VTAC.

I'd love to put a full size safety on my shield and ride it like a 1911....or like a dirty girl..... yeah much more like that.

I have never been able to find the thumb safety kit and S&W wont sell the whole kit. I have been looking for a while, and I hope someone in the EE sales me one.

Call them tell them the spring and cam flew out while you we're doing a full cleaning. See if they will send one. If that doesn't work try the m&p pistol forum.

I doubt they will because that doesn't fall under warranty work. If you had an armorer call for you, it might.
