I bought a RIA 1911 to use as a starting point for a semi custom build. I am going to hang a Silencerco Osprey can to hang off it and possibly putting some kind of red dot scope on it. As it wears I might send it to a gunsmith to have some of the internals replaced. I thought it would be a good idea. A friend says Im crazy for putting that much into a cheap pistol and says I should have started with a higher end pistol. Am I crazy? This will be my firsts suppressor. I will eventually get a TRP. Would that be a better pistol for the can? I was going to leave that one alone and figured it would be better to start with a cheap pistol and make it the way I want.

If you have the money and want to do all this to your gun...do it!
Personally, if I had the money for an Osprey, threaded barrel, red dot, new internals, I would have gotten the TRP first and just saved for the silencer.
Good luck if you do all that though, of course you know we will expect pics

Well the internals wont get changed until after 5000 rounds or so and I dont want to spend the money on a TRP to only drill holes in the frame to mount a red dot. If all goes well the Osprey will be ordered next month

I personally would have started with a Springfield GI due to the forged farme and slide, but it's your blaster. I'd do whatever makes you happy!

Are you going to mill the slide for the RDS?  If not, Trijicon and Burris have mounts that use the rear sight dovetail.

A FNP-45 Tactical is already "RDS-ready" and "suppressor-ready" (threaded barrel).

You are going to have to get a threaded barrel fitted.

I was going to mil the slide. When I was doing my research that was all that I found. Thanks for showing me the Trijicon mount. I will go that route instead.

I will have to look in to a FNP45 Tactical. Im still going to hang a can off the 1911 but may hold off on the RDS. Later I might pick up the FNP45 and put a RDS on it. I want to find one to shoot first.

I figured I would need to fit the barrel. I called Jarvis and was told that I wouldnt. I will see how it goes when it get here.

Use what you have. Your logic is sound. I have a hard time hanging in the hand gun forums any more. Mostly I post in reloading forum where folks can reason above a general discussion level of intelligence. This insanity that you need to spend 3k with one of the pre-madonna gunsmiths to have anything of value or reliability is just insane !!

btw: I've been following some who have spent sur real amounts of cash they didn't have. Who've custom pistols posted for sale in past and now.  On EE and gun broker.

My Son calls last night and said he found his next 3k scope to go on his next 4k rifle. He says you have to pay to play. He competes on a world class level. I'm like,  my old Winchester 70 Stealth pounds the same steel LaRue targets at a grand as your 6k set up. Granted I do need to spend a grand on a new piece of glass. Anyway.... I said if you'll notice I always have money for bullets and sometimes you don't..... end of discussion.

I noticed the Glock FanBois are at it again in hand gun forum.... Hhhhmmmm.....  Might be a reason to have some fun there. Again....Then again maybe not. To make it fair,  both hands and one leg need to be tied behind one's back.

Don't Laugh, because 1911 guys can take it to finger nails on chalk board levels too.

Which brings me full circle to my point and your logic before you allowed others to cloud your judgement. Your Can can always be screwed onto another gun and your still in the experimental stage of your 1911 experience. You bought your Rock Island to learn the platform without breaking the bank. Your simply working, or climbing that ladder a little higher than most would with an entry level pistol. I would continue on as you are. Your still experimenting.

Now for my opinion. Once you get everything the way you want. Polish your slide smooth, de-identifying your slide and have a tough exterior finish applied or have it expertly blued. Front strap done and now you have something. Then off you go to your next 1911 with a higher degree of confidence you know what it is you're doing... with I might add an end goal in mind before the start.

To complete your entry level experience. Everyone should learn to reload for their 1911s. Especially see'ings how a high percentage of 1911 feed failure is ammunition related.

Sounds good to me, I forgot about having to drill...I wouldn't do that to a TRP either. The Osprey will be sweet for sure. Just curious, what brand threaded barrel do you plan on using?
