I took the GLOCK basic armorers course today because it's something I've always wanted to do. I'm a firm believer in knowing how mechanical things work just to know. I've taken down my slide before (into it's basic components and assemblies, but have never taken those assemblies apart) but never the frame or the firing pin assembly on my own, and I've owned GLOCKs for over 15 years. I was completely amazed at how simple the design is. I knew they were simple but didn't truely understand to what extent and how there are so few parts to them.

I guess I'm used to tinkering on more "traditional" firearms with screws and more complex assemblies (and I own or have owned many other brands of pistols). The course was excellent overall.

On a side note the instructor talked about the Gen 4 "issues" and stated that they have been largely overblown on the internet and that the actual # of problems has been very rare. There were 6-8 agencies present at the course (I didn't get an exact count) that are currently using Gen 4 systems and none of them have had any issues. He seemed very genuine that GLOCK will stand behind their products and help diagnose and fix any issues that people may have, if they have any. He didn't downplay "internet rumors" or say "that's all BS", he seemed very supportive and had an "if you have any issues, we want to know about them" kind of attitude in a proactive way.

Take it for what it's worth, but I walked away impressed.

Did they show you how to remove the old firing pin channel liner and install a new one? What parts other than the Glock Armorer's Tool, Armorer's Slide Cover Plate, front and rear sight tools do they recommend using, say for changing the magazine catch and magazine catch spring, and removing/installing the firing pin channel liner?

For the magazine catch and magazine catch spring I use a curved dental pick and long needle-nose pliers, and for the firing pin channel liner I use a 5/16 inch male thread bolt to remove it, and a 5/16 inch dowel rod to push the new one in.

The only other tool we used was a small flat head screwdriver. The 5/16 inch bolt for the channel liner and needle nose pliers for the mag release spring were mentioned as well but we didn't remove either for the class. I was able to easily remove/install the mag catch withjust the screw driver.

Glock's simplicity never ceases to amaze me either.

The simplicity of some Glock owners never ceases to amaze me!    (and I don't mean anybody already posting in this thread!)
