.45acp, 230gr ball FMJ.  If I need more than 14 rounds of that, I better re-think things and consider running.

i'm suprised no one has listed  Speer Gold Dot. I won't carry anything but Gold Dot. After i read a police report on shooting and a gold dot round  in .40 S&W. It went through a sheet of plywood, a car door and through the suspect. I am looking to try the new Federal expanding metal jacket round.

I currently carry Spear Gold Dot in my Glock 23.  .40cal 165gr I am concidering switching to the 180gr rounds.  What is their a real difference in preformance if so what is it?  Has anybody used Winchester SXT's in .40 cal and how do they preform?

While the Speer Gold Dot performs well almost all calibers, I have to question your criteria for picking it.  Almost any .40cal pistol bullet will go through a sheet of plywood, a car door and into the suspect.  I would advise against the Federal EFMJ round, it does not perform favorably.

The Speer Gold Dot performs very well in both 165gr and 180gr.  Winchester Ranger SXT is the older version of todays Winchester Ranger "T" series.  It performed well but failed to expand more often than most would like.  The new Winchester Ranger "T" series is arguably the best performing ammunition in 165gr and 180gr.  The difference is minimal and insignificant.

This might sound crazy, but I prefer Gold Dot because of the name.  It's at least on par with Black Talon/Ranger/SXT and Hydra Shock, but doesn't sound threatening.

I wouldn't want to have to explain why I shot an aggressor with "cop-killers".  I also am a little concerned about how it might read in the paper.  But Gold Dot?  That's not going to ring any bells with the average reader/reporter.

And most importantly, it is a good quality carry ammo with lots of stopping power, right?

The difference may be minimal and insignificant, but most of us civvies can't even get the T series...only available to LEO and well-connected folk :)

The difference between terminal performance of the GD and the Ranger "T" in .40cal 165 & 180gr is insignificant.  Get which one is cheapest and operates reliably in your pistol.

GD bullets come loaded from lots of manufacturers.  Make sure you choose one with low flash like the ammunition loaded directly from Speer.

Winchester Ranger "T" have very little flash.  Baseball to softball (depends on barrel length) size dull orange flash that has very little effect on my eyes night vision.

th Federal EFMJ preformed poorly? How so? The entire idea behind it was to expand better than your avg. defense round. Logically it would mushroom much larger than the typical hollow point.

The EFMJ is an intriguing idea and while it may one day be very good and consistent, today's EFMJ's underperform good JHPs.   The actual "idea behind it" was to create an FMJ that performed as well as a JHP for applications where JHP's are forbidden.

The EFMJ's are inconsistent expanders, sometimes not expanding at all.  They also tend to come apart completely on occation.  They are just not in the same performance class as a good JHP.  Would I take them over an FMJ pistol bullet?  Probably.
