Within the next week, I am going to buy either an XD .45 or a SA GI 1911.  I am strongly leaning toward the 1911, but am wondering if they will feed JHP's right out of the box.  Since my wife and I just had our first baby, I don't have the funds for to have smithing work done on the gun.  Any and all advice is greately appreciated.

I'm a big 1911 fan, but I think you'll probably have a more reliable gun if you buy the XD.

If you're on a budget and want a gun for home defence why not consider a shotgun. Less money

and shotgun beats handgun.

Thanks for the input, Flushdraw.  I already have a shotgun as well as several other longguns.  I have spent time shooting a friend's .45 Glock and I like it, but the XD/1911's fit in my small, stubby hands better that the big Glock.

In my experience with MY 1911 (Kimber Warrior), I'd load FMJ or something like Federals EPFMJ rounds for home defense/optimal reliability purposes.  I've shot a decent amount of both of those rounds without a hitch.  I have had some Fail to Feeds with the JHP, like Winchester Ranger.  Not all the time, but enough that JHP wouldn't be my choice for optimal reliability.
