Wanting some inexpensive 9mm practice ammo, I picked up a box of (150) Winchester steel case ammo at Wal-Mart.

I handload, but have not yet set up for 9mm.  I notice the cases on this ammo seem to be taper crimped. Very obvious compared to other brands, and the many .45 acp rounds I have loaded.

Knowing that these rounds headspace on the case mouth... what the hell?

Anyway, otherwise this ammo looks inferior to any other 9mm ammo in my stash.  The extractor grooves look crusty and dirty.  It makes the Tula steel case look handsome by comparison.

Any experience with this stuff?

I have not used any of their steel cased ammo yet. But I definitely notice a heavy taper crimp on WWB 9mm, much more than other ammo I shoot.

Seems like that could be a problem and certainly goes against typical practice for this type of cartridge.  Guess I'll shoot this up first and get something else.  Makes all my other mongrel 9mm look good.

I noticed that last night on a box of WWB as well.  Almost like the bullet is seamless against the casing.

I have shot 450 rounds of the Win steel case through a CZ scorpion and glock 19 with no issues.  Its my now preferred indoor range load as I used to use the federal aluminum cased stuff.  I cant use the aluminum stuff in the scorpion apparently, and the winchester steel case does not have a bi-metal jacket allowing it in the indoor range.  It does appear to have a weird crimp, but the ammo runs well enough for me and is accurate enough for my purposes.

FWIW I don't notice this heavy crimp on Winchester 124gr NATO.

I no longer shoot any Winchester white box products in my guns. After observing several jams in others guns, I started to see defective rounds in the boxes I had purchased. I went through the process of contacting Winchester, sending my defective rounds and over A 100 rounds of the remaining lot back only to be ignored like the event the never happened. Yes I have photos and an email trail.

While I may not be able to change anything at Winchester, I will frequently share my experience.

Please package the ammunition you’re returning snugly into a plain/sturdy cardboard box. On the attached PDF, the second page has two black/white diamond shaped labels, attach one of these labels to the outside of the plain cardboard box. If the package is large enough to adhere the large label without overlapping the side of the package it should be used. If the package is not large enough, the smaller label may be used. The package must be large enough for at least the smaller label. The size of these labels cannot be altered. Below is the email from UPS with links to your electronic call tag. Please print out the UPS shipment label and the label I’ve attached to this email, tape them both to the box and drop off at a UPS customer center/hub (most UPS stores/mailbox stores will not accept ammunition).

Please reference your name and file #0317-300  when responding or calling.

I have shot a lot of WWB over the years (over 10K) I prefer CCI but every ugly round of WWB has worked . I have had a round of Ranger 127+p+ hp with no hollow point . It is a mass produced product . QC could use some fine tuning in all mass produced ammo

Back in '09-'10 I had 4 crushed case mouths on WWB 9mm.  I shot a BUNCH of that stuff back in my IDPA/USPSA days.  It's generally good stuff, but not priced particularly competitively.
