Want to carry one.  Is it reliable out of the box?

Sights are gonna be awefully hard to see...

I would avoid carrying one. Mine does not go fully into battery when loading a new round every now and then - not enough to spend any time trying to fix it. I only use hardball, but it still does it often enough that I would not trust my life to it. For around $400 dollars you can get a much more reliable gun with better sights for carrying.

I do.

Is it reliable out of the box?

This is one of lifes great unknowns....  No one can answer this for you.  You won't know the answer to this question until you have fired hundreds of rounds in that gun to get the answer.

Is mine reliable?  Sure is, but then again, I have put a lot of rounds through it to verify that it and the magazines are reliable.
As far as the sights are concerned, mine are the original factory ones.

I've carried a Mil 1911A1 and was fine with it.

Sights are almost irrelevant for most CCW shootings.
I prefer the larger simple blade Mil-Spec / Colt type over all others, even the chock block " racy ramp" style rear sights, but if you are fine with the small GI type, go with it.

How do you figure sights are "almost irrelevant" everything is relevant anything that gives you an edge over your enemy is relevant.  Would you be whiling to go into a shooting without your sights.  I can understand at a 1m distance but if you are being shot at from 20m sights are going to be essential to avoid collateral damage.  You do not want to try the point and pray method.

Because the vast majority of Civ CCW shootings occur from halitosis to direct contact range, not 20M.

I would not trust any pistol out of the box using modern JHPs.  Even if Springfield produced the greatest 1911 ever, and you bought it, you're still at the mercy of the magazine manufacturer.  Maybe your mags were made by the company drunk at 4:45 on a Friday.

Remember, even the most reputable manufacturers have warranty departments.

reliable out of the box no one knows.  if its not, give it about 200rds of fmj for a break in before you say its a piece of shit and curse off 1911's forever.

Mine has been reliable but I don't carry it.

Eats hollowpoint ammunition just fine.

I may carry it if I decide to install night sights but right now it is just a range gun.

I bought one as my first handgun and had some of fun with it. On the other hand I had failure to return to battery once on nearly every magazine. After about 1000 rds wound up selling it out of frustration. I've carried Sigs and Berettas at work and own Glocks now and never had a problem with either of the three. My opinion is that you should look towards something else for a carry piece.

Not with the stock mags.  At least that was the case with my friend's.   It does run like a sewing machine with Tripp Cobra mags though.

Might try CMC Power Mags, as well.

My Springfield GI has gotten progressively smoother as its been used.  I think the final "machining" results from use.  After about 300 rounds, mine is running 100% (if one can say that with such a low round count).  At any rate, things have changed for the better as I've used it, for sure.

Mine has been reliable. Good mags are the key.

I used to carry it but carry something else now, mostly because of the sights. GI type sights really do suck.

I agree with the mags issue.  Get good mags.  "Out of the box reliability" is kind of a croc IMO.  Get a couple hundred rounds in ANY gun before carrying it.  Personally, I would save a little more and get the the mil-spec version. It already has upgraded sights, better chamber, ramp, and ejection port (which is much better for reliability).

+1 to the mil spec or even a loaded model.

I have to say that mine has been great to me so far. I dont CC it but will in the future after I do some mods to it when funds come around. One thing I really like about it is that I dont have to go find the 45 brass after shooting it because all of it is by my feet.

I CC a Springfield GI Full Size, and sometimes a 4" Springfield GI  (when I am not carrying my USP),

Both have been great.
I have about 400 rounds through the full size, and around 250 through the 4".

I like em.

Well, I walked in to look at a GI at my store and in the used gun counter, there was a like new Springer stainless loaded target for $699.

I couldn't resist, slapped down another gun I was going to use for trading. It was the same price as a new mil spec and only 150 more than a GI. I don't think it has even been fired and it came with everything as new.

I wanted a gun to shoot and carry a little when in the mood. I don't particularly like the adjustable sights and wouldn't mind finding something to replace them with.

Hope this works.  It came with a nice mag well that I took off.

I would like to figure out a way to round off the corners of the rear sight a little as I would like to CCW this thing from time to time for kicks.

this

of course, the 1st thing i did was upgrade the stock spring to a 16lfb wolff

My 5" GI model has not been reliable. It has had consistant failures to feed and failures to eject. I replaced the mags with Wilson Combats (already had a bunch from other 1911s I own) and ended up polishing the feed ramp and opening up the port a bit, among other things.

It is better now,but still not 100%. I only trust it with hardball.

Basically I consider these base model Springfield guns to simply be bases for custom builds.

For an out of the box 1911 to use as a carry gun, I would look elsewhere.

exactly.

please site how many cases where civilian self defense shooting have happened at greater than 7 meters.

I bet you'll be able to count them on one hand.

and if your 20m from a bad guy (that's about 100') you should be running away or getting your family to safety, unless your in security or LEO/Mil.

Just shot it today for the first time.  Ran well on all ammo but HSM police stuff.  Wouldn't hardly even chamber them and when it did and I fired, the new round stuck half way in the chamber.  It did it with all bullets.  Shot Israeli 45, Walmart bulk Winchester, and Wolf and they ran fine.

HSM is garbage, its only good for malfunction drills. I bought a bunch before i knoew better, i had an average of 2 ftf's per 50 rounds, in both my handguns, Colt 1911 and M&P.
